Harry Potter Maker Camp – Quote summer5 for 5% of 2021 summer camps

After the highlight of 2020 year end school holiday of the Harry Potter Science Camp by Newton Show, my boys were back for another Harry Potter camp but this time with Maker.sg which is the sister company of Newton but focuses on coding and stem based activitiest

With the plethora of camps offered by both Newton Show and Maker.sg , my boys still insist to be potterheads and continue their obsessions of Harry Potter. No thanks to phase 2 Heightened Alert, instead of attending on the first week for the local June school holidays, they only managed to attend the camp on the last week of the school holiday. Thank god for phase 3 Heightened Alert which started 1 week before the school holidays ended, not going holiday is already depressing enough, the pandemic almost took away their summer camp.

Instead a science based camp over at the Newton Show, Maker.sg offers a more stem based  and robotic camps for kids age 5 to 14 years old and their current summer camps run til 27 August offering 2 different camps – Harry Potter and Hands and Brain Camp

These are what my kids experienced during the 5-day Harry Potter Science School last week. In fact, my boys preferred this camp over the Newton Show as there are more hands on and tinkering to do. From the photo perspective, it may not seem as wow compared the many science experiments over at the Newton Show but from this camp, the kids get to think, invent, create endlessly throughout the 5-day camp and most of which they get to bring home to continue to tinker and play.

Day 1

-STEM magic world of unicorn and dragons
-Wind creatures
– Doodle hypogryph

Day 2

-flying toy
-magic electronic wand
-steady hand game

Day 3

-math art web
-static snake with balloon
– merry go round music box

Day 4

-robot kingdom of the world
-Hogwarts map with ozobot
-Quiddith ozobot

Day 5

-camera obscura
-newton’s cradle
-optical illusion

These are some photos taken during camp by the facilitators which were shared with the parents daily (photo credit: Maker.sg)

My 2 boys had once again had graduated from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and learn about about code, tinkering, robotics, engineering and many more stem related activities. In fact, my boys said that they prefer this camp over the science camp as there are more hands on activities and many of their creations can be brought home. They also get to use premium equipments during the entire course of the camp!

For the camp fee of SGD 630, it is an all-inclusive camp – all materials, 2 snacks, lunch, t-shirt, photo, certificate and prizes included and they will provide daily video (the only camp in Singapore that sends you a daily video). I totally appreciate their effort to compile and update the parents on a daily basis of the happenings in camp so that we can talk about it at the end of the day and share their excitement too!

Besides the Harry Potter camp, if you are not so much of a potterhead like my kids there is Hands and Brain camps at 3 location – Center, East and West (addresses below) or the 5 summer camps (3 new ones – Tomato Cooking School, Drama Lama and Visualize Art and Design happening over at Newton Show too .

Quote summer5 for 5% of all summer camps at Maker.sg and Newton Show .

Heart Studio Term 2 – online classes

We only managed to start the first lesson of the final 4-week for term 2 when phase 2 heightened alert started.  Given that this was not the first time we did home based lessons, I was not apprehensive about having term 2 completed online. Given that small C is very familiar with Teacher Jay and vice versa, it was actually easy executing the art lessons online. Having picked up the unfinished art work and some materials from the studio, we were all set to finish the remaining 3 art lessons for term 2. Term 2 theme was the underwater world, and small C drew a shark as the main focus of his artwork.

The first lesson was drawing and painting of the shark which we managed to do to in class while the remaining 3 lessons of this 4-week artwork were done online – completing the details on the sea creature, painting on the cardboard background pasting the cut out of the shark on the background.

If there is anything I needed to help was pouring and mixing the paint to minimise mess, or than that, small C was pretty independent, taking instruction from Teacher Jay and executing on his art work. Even though the kids are painting at different level of completion , Teacher Jay was very experienced and organised ensuring progress in every kid. I do hope that the kids are able to go back to the studio by term 3, but said from the online classes,  I was very heartened to see small C painting almost independently at home , how he has grown by being able to focus and take take instruction on a virtual setting – all these comes from the no hand-holding concept that Heart Studio focuses very much in their art classes.

This was how we did it all at home!

Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken ~ A mother’s love and support

True story, I have decided to take some time off from work in quarter 3 this year to be by big J side to “support” him in his PSLE revision in the afternoon when he is back from school. I have a very supportive boss and he told me that I should also use my time off to cook some nutritious food for my boy as well. I didn’t cross my mind as you know I am no domestic goddess and I cannot cook for the life of me. That said, I can always procure nutritious supplements to see him through the next 5 months and especially during the final weeks to ensure he is in his optimal health condition entering the exam hall.

I think it is no secret that Asia mothers will prepare/buy chicken essence for their kids who are going for the exams. I was no exception as my mum always made sure that I had essence of chicken before major examinations. Now it is time for me to be that mum as I prepare my eldest boy for his biggest examination to date.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), chicken broth is used to nourish the energy (qi) of the body, invigorate spleen and stomach, and strengthening the bones and joints. Typically, they used the traditional dripping method which time consuming and nutrients maybe lose during the process.

With over 90 years of experience , Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken exclusively distributed by Hao Yi Kang uses their 8 hours unique slow-boiling method which allows a more comprehensive extraction of nutrients, making very drop of essence truly precious. Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken has been voted the Best Chicken Essence for Nourishment for 4 years consecutively.

What make the taste of their Premium Chicken Essence truly superior is the used of only 2nd generation free range hens that are at least 12 months old which has the highest nutritional value, paired with small amount of premium pork ribs to create a different dimension of taste and enhance nutritional content of the chicken essence.

One of the main reasons why  I have not introduced any form of chicken essence as I do not like the taste personally and I don’t think my kids can tolerate this taste either. However, this is not the case with Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken. This chicken essence tastes just like chicken soup. I had given this to all 4 of my kids (suitable for kids above 2) and all approved of the taste and asked for more!

Preparation is super simple, just dipped in hot water and within 3 minutes, it is all warmed and ready to serve. As the essence comes in 42ml sachets, it is also more convenient to be brought out and also warm up way faster than glass bottles. I will have a pack ready before he head to school on exam days and for long revision days. Besides having this on its own, you can also include in dishes like steam chicken, braised fish, noodle soup etc.

For students, working adults, athletes, chicken essence is a perfect supplement to combat fatigue, boost energy level, improve concentration, strengthen immune system and aid in recuperation for people recovering from sickness.

It is also very beneficial for pre and post natal as it helps with baby’s growth and development, promote post-natal milk secretion and enhance quality of breast milk, and also speed up wound recovery.

It is recommended to consume 1 pack  daily before meal in the morning, do not have it at night as you don’t want to stay awake the entire night.

Lao Xie Zhen Premium Boiled Essence of Chicken is 100% natural and do not contain preservatives, additives, artificial flavouring, antibiotics and plasticizer residue

Heart Studio Term 2 2021 – close to our hearts – neighbourhood

After 2 weeks break, small C couldn’t be happier to be back at Heart Studio for another term. His weekly Sunday art classes with Heart Studio are undoubtedly his favourite class of his entire week (he does have quite many classes for a 6 year old, swim, badminton, Chinese, phonic and abacus, but all these do not give him the same joy as what he gets from Teacher Jay class at Heart Studio)

For the new term, the kids in Little Dali start with a 4-week project to the neighbourhood theme, something relatable to them. As with every new art project, Teacher Jay will introduce all the possible elements that you can find in a neighbourhood – roads, buildings, vehicles of different shapes and sizes. It was very interesting to see Among Us shaped buildings, animal shape buildings -all up to the creativity of the each kid.

Week 2 is to put all the ideas and elements into the actual art paper. This time, small C is exposed to the use of watercolour as most time they use acrylic paints instead. Due to the smaller details, it is easier to paint using watercolour than acrylic for this artwork. As for the smaller details, small C uses marker to outline the details so that all his imagination will come to life.

This theme may not be as interesting as the circus or the stacked burger, but this is definitely something closer to heart and more relatable as kids are love transportation especially, and having roads as base give him more room to expand on his imagination and creativity.

Almost 1 year update: In the blink of an eye, it is almost 1 year since small C start his journey with  Heart Studio since middle of last year and this current term is small C’s fourth term! I still remember when small C started Teacher Jay mentioned that he was raw in terms of motor skills and maybe more suited for a younger class. However, given that Small C was able to focus in class and the small class size ratio, he was always able to catch with the older kids in class and draw and paint independently. I noticed that he has improved in his motor skills development and also his focus and concentration (though sometime he still chit chat with kids from his class). The most heartening to see him doodling what he has learnt in class during his free time. He is very much into art and drawing, so the art classes at Heart Studio  were able to truly explore and expand his interest and potential.

Do check out  Heart Studio wholesome art classes for kids as young as 3 and you will know why this is small C’s favourite class of the week!

Baowow Otah Buns – homemade, handmade with love and as local as it can get

Looking for picnic food, part food, breakfast food, tea break, snack box food, how about trying Otah Buns for a change. I tried Baowow Otah Buns for the first time and I think this is one great alternative to office, home, parties snacks that is super versatile, super convenient and super local! #supportlocal

Since its inception in 1993, Baowow has been a leading supplier of fresh otah in Singapore, developing many business customers in the form of restaurants, eateries, and supermarkets. They are known for their unique spice and taste, made possible because of our use of freshly line caught Spanish Mackerel. In the same year, Baowow launched a retail division, selling via their retail channels. By July 2015, they had a total of 7 processing premises in Singapore. The Otah Bun is their latest R&D product, having sold more than 2,000 buns within the first week of operation.

What most otah sellers do not know is that when they purchase fresh Spanish Mackerel from the fishmongers, it is important to opt for only those caught with line. Yes, they are a lot more expensive because the speed of supply is incredibly low, but, it does affect the overall taste a lot. When the fish is caught by net, there is inevitable trauma to the fish. Bundled with stress, you get a different taste, one that is more blend. As a result, food producers have to use more artificial flavouring that just does not taste as good as the real deal.  At Baowow, they obtain the freshest wild catch of Spanish Mackerel daily, and hand make them into the best tasting Otah filling you would have ever tasted. They also do not keep their Otah overnight as food products that contain Mackerel typically spoil after 3 days, due to their fat content. The mackarel that they use are line caught. Net caught mackerels cause inevitable trauma to the fish, which affect its taste greatly!

Using premium ingredients and spices only, Baowow blend all ingredients by hand until it becomes thick and fragrant. They then further fry this paste until it turns into a rich and orangey colour. The brand spent at least 10 years perfecting their blend in Muar, Johor, and they are still performing research on a daily basis to discover how they can improve. Baowow steam their handmade buns, filling them with otah before they are frozen for stock purchases, or delivered immediately fresh for your consumption. When buying from their official website, you can also choose to have them delivered piping hot or frozen.

My verdict

Baowow offers three main products at the moment.

Original – piping hot ($10 for set of 5 and $20 for set of 10) , frozen ($7 for set of 5 and $13.50 for set of 10)

Pandan/Charcoal- piping hot ($10.50 for set of 5 and $20.50 for set of 10) , frozen ($7.50 for set of 5 and $14 for set of 10)

So I decided to order both piping hot Otah Buns in all 3 flavours for immediate consumption. It came super piping hot. You can see from the photo the steam and the water condensation as they arrived really piping hot! Having Otah Buns for the first time , I am totally blown away by the combination of otah fillings and soft steamed buns, and I couldn’t stop at 1. You can taste the freshness, fragrant and super generous fillings and I don’t find it spicy hence making this #childfriendly too. Frankly, I feel that between the 3 flavours, it does not differ much as it was the otah filling that I taste more than flavour of the bun ie pandan or charcoal. These will be a good addition to home parties or even kids birthday parties as easy to share, no mess and quite filing too!

My husband who cooks well say that these buns very well-made, as it was not merely slotting the otah paste into the bun , the bun and the filing and the bun are infused together as 1 , so the filling wouldn’t even drop off at all making every mouthful you have hacing both the bun and the otah paste.

I also ordered the frozen Otah Buns as I wanted to keep it for kids’ morning breakfasts before school or even to pack for their snack break or after school. Super convenient and easy as you just need to steam it beforehand and you don’t really have to consume it piping hot. It tastes as good at room temperature too. Especially for us parents we had run out of ideas of what to prepare for their morning breakfast or snack break, Otah Buns from Baowow are definitely a good new addition. The frozen buns can be kept up to 2 months in the freezer.

Free delivery is available in Singapore for a single order above S$100, with a delivery charge of S$6 for orders below S$100.

Heart Studio Term 1 2021 – It was wild fun at the circus

After complete the stacked burger art work , Little Dali had a two week technical drawing to learn to draw all Chinese Lunar New Year inspired drawing – lion dance, firecracker, couplets etc.

Quickly they move on to their next 4-week project – another theme that small C loves  – Circus ! Pre-covid, we had attended to two circuses which came to town – Cirque du Soleil and The Great Moscow Circus with fond memories and to recreate it through drawings , it was really a nice recollection of memories

As with every new art project, Teacher Jay will introduce all the possible components of the circus – elephants, animal, big top, human cannon ball , clown, jugglers etc. For the first week, the kids were exposed to drawing and sketching the components that the kids wanted to include into their artwork.

Week 2 is to have it all on the actual art paper, followed by painting
and detailed painting on the fourth week. Some may think it is slow to only churn out 1 art work over 4 weeks, but it is the process of appreciating each step of drawing and painting that is more important than churning out completed art work week after week.

I think I said previously the stacked burger was my favourite to date, sorry, I just had a new favourite!

Do check out  Heart Studio March holiday programme, many are full already due to small class sizes, but I am sure there are still slots here and there to slot it for your child.

Giveaway: Snailax SL-236 Air Compression Shiatsu Neck and Back Massager – realising my 5 year dream of owning a massage chair at a fraction of the price

True story, 5 years ago my family moved into a bigger home to cater for my expanding family and with that I had a vision to furnish my new home with my wish list of furniture as the new home has more space – a coffee maker, a swing chair and a massage chair. I had brought the first two on my wish list the minute I moved into my new home , but my dream of owning a massage chair remains elusive – partly due to its bulkiness and its immense cost. My friends also advised me against buying as many experienced with the bulky massage chairs being a white elephant and probably piling with laundry ie “storage space” and its leather tearing due to irregular use and wear and tear.

So fast forward today, that one item remained in my wish list as I am unable to come to terms with the cost,  its bulkiness and space consumption. However, finally some semblance of my wish was met with Snailax SL-236 Premium Shiatsu Massager Chair Pad as it solves the two major considerations that stopped me from buying – cost and bulkiness. This costs less than 5% of the high end massage chairs and weighs less than 8kg, which means you have it in your living room while watching TV, in your bedroom for a session before bedtime or even at work on your office chair!

At first sight

It weighs less than 8kg,  I can easily carry it to be placed at any part of the house. Made of PU leather and breathable mesh,  it is not hot even when used in non air-conditioned room. The material is of good quality and durable to wear and tear. It comes with a remote control to manage all your massaging needs which I will go in details later. The cover for the neck is detachable and washable.

detachable cover

detachable cover

pocket for remote control

Using it

Using the remote control, firstly control the height of the neck massage. And if you need a bit of height, you can easily place a seat cushion on the chair pad to prop you higher. Comprising 4 shiatsu rotation nodes, this provides deep kneading massages to the neck and shoulder.

For the back massager, you can choose between spot (upper or lower) for a more targeted massage or a full back shiatsu massage. Comprising 8 upgraded flexible shiatsu rollers, they deliver relaxing deep tissue massage for the whole back. The shiatsu nodes also come with an optional infrared heat therapy  which helps improve blood flow, delivers gentle warmth to further relax muscles stiffness and back pains. There is also the option of air compression massage to your back as well, so its both air compression plus shiatsu at the same time.

There is a detachable intensity control flap that comes with the massager to give you a softer shiatsu massage, if you want a stronger massage, you can remove the flap entirely.

detachable intensity flap

The seat massager comes with air compression and vibration seat massage to help to relief your muscles. There are 3 level of air pressure and 3 levels of vibration intensity to choose from.

It is recommended a continuous massage of 15 minutes per session and not more than 3 sessions per day.

Loving it

I can’t afford to have a full body massage at the massage centre daily but now I can have my massage every day at the comfort of home or even during my lunch break on days when I work from home.

You can also have also have it in a reclined position. As I have propped my massager on my reclining sofa bed, this allow me to have it at different gradient for a more relaxing massage.

Combining with my air compression leg massager from their sister brand Comfier (review post here), I got almost a full body massage (neck, shoulder back, lumber, thigh, leg, feet and calf combining both massager together) probably almost close to the enjoyment of a full high end massage chair  (I suppose only the arm that is left out) and the best part you can prop it on any chair – sofa, recliner, couch, dining chair and even on your office chair.

Priced a small fraction of a full fledged massage chair, I can almost say the level of intensity is no less than that of a full fledged massage chair. For those of you like me dreams of owning a massage chair at home for the longest time, but unwilling to spend so much or have the space at home for it, this is the truly the best alternative. And if you want a full body, then add on the Comfier air compression leg massager (purchase link here

All massager come with 30 days unconditional return, 90 days refund/replacement if product breakdown and 24 month warranty. Priced at a very affordable SGD238, this is a small amount in comparison to the full fledged massage chair found in the market.

If you would like to give it a try on demo units before purchasing, do contact Shulan at 91134943, they are located at Orchard Centrepoint, Mon-Fri 9am to 6pm, Sat & Sun on-demand basis between 10am to 5pm on appointment basis only.

Royal Eternity Tea House 洛吟茶事 , a sanctuary and an event space like no other

For 1 hour at Royal Eternity Tea House 洛吟茶事, I have completely forgotten that I am in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city centre and transported to a sanctuary unlike anything I have experienced in Singapore and savouring the highest quality tea with my girlfriend. Tea plantation and teahouses are always in my itinerary when I travelled to China and Taiwan as the tranquility is unparalleled and this short respite cured a bit of my travel lust albeit a short 1 hour.

The space
Before partaking in tea making, I had a quick tour of this elegantly designed event space and tea house perfectly suited for your intimate events. The space comprise 5 type of room sizes (for 2 to 12 pax) complete with wifi, tv screen, projector, wine cooler,  sound system, plush sofa and a wide variety of tea to choose and savour (additional charges applied).

There are 2 common rooms at the ground floor and 3 private rooms on the first floor which spots modern and chic design with hints of oriental decors and Chinese art. The booking fee for the private rooms is from $150 to $250 per hour, minimum 2 hours.  With the new normal of 8-pax gathering, this intimate and elegant venue has been hosting many solemnisation events. Besides that, you can romantic dates, business meetings (they also have license to sell wine and alcohol) , corporate events, school events to learn tea making and learning Chinese arts and culture, part of heritage tours, or a date with girlfriends etc.

Level 1 Glass Room – $99 per hour minimum 2 hours

Level 1 Royal Meeting Room – $150 per hour, minimum 2 hours

Level 2 Master Room – $250 per hour, minimum 2 hours

Level 2 Central Meeting Room – $150 per hour, minimum 2 hours

Level 2 room with sofa – $160 per hour, minimum 2 hours

Even if you have no event but wish to savour some good tea in this sanctuary, with any purchase of the tea on their menu, you have a 45-minute session to enjoy with your companion which was what I did today. It costs $28 per pax inclusive of tea, and for up to 6 pax hosted in the beautiful glass room.

Tea making experience

I am not a connoisseur but I love drinking Chinese tea  purely for the enjoyment and also its health benefits  – risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight loss and many more.

In the universe of Chinese tea there are six basic types of Chinese tea: green, white, yellow, red, oo long and dark tea (puerh, pu’er). At Royal Eternity Tea House, they carry 4 types of teas – white (bai cha), red (hong cha), oolong and pu-er tea to their guests to choose from which retails from SGD 58 to 68.

You can also prearranged titbits and small bites with tea house to accompany the tea savouring enjoyment prior to visiting the tea house.

We had the privilege of Xiao Yu, a tea expert from China making us a decadent cup of tea and seeing how deftly she soaked the tea leaves and prepared cup after cup.

We had hong cha (red tea) which was according to Xiao Yu the mildest variant of tea , well-known as an afternoon tea for its mellow and sweet flavor. It is so mild that it will not cause insomnia if drank at night. I love the smoothness and sweet and floral taste, perfect after a heavy meal too!  We had a very enjoyable afternoon tea experience, perhaps some variety of light snacks readily available for ordering like pastry or puff will have it a more wholesome experience as I savour my tea. That said, many of their guests come to savour tea after their heavy meal.

Whether you have an intimate event to host, and would have time to slow down life and savour the highest quality Chinese tea made by a tea making expert like Xiao Yu, this is one venue that I recommend you to check out.

Ultrasound EMS Body Slimming Massager Anti-Cellulite Fat Burner from Fresh Dailies – the ideal home slimming, toning and massaging companion

Slimming done at the comfort and home and anytime and as many times as you wish the day without spending thousand at the beauty salon, I am sold! Even with exercising, the fat in some areas – like belly, waist, arms, back, hips, and thighs – is stubborn. Just exercising and eating healthy may not help. This is where body-sculpting devices or cavitation machines come into the picture. These are non-invasive and painless devices that use heat and sound waves to burn fat, reduce cellulite, and tighten loose skin.

With Ultrasound EMS Body Slimming Massager Anti-Cellulite Fat Burner , you can literally massage any part of your body – arms, waist, abdomen, hip, foot , legs, face , neck!

Featuring 3 main functions:

Ultrasonic Cavitation

Ultrasound waves are sent deep into the layers of your skin, causing a disruptive vibration. Fat cells then break apart from each other and are dislodged from your dermal layers. After a few days, the fat cells are absorbed by your lymphatic system and drained as waste from your body.

Infrared Therapy

The carbon fibre bundle around the main device to generate far infrared ray with the wavelength ranging 8 -12μm. It can penetrate into deep skin and subcutaneous tissues, boost vigour of skin, activate cells and accelerate metabolism. Quickly and effectively relieve fatigue and reduce chronic back pains, inflammations and other sort of body aches. It is safe, natural, non-invasive and painless.

Microcurrent EMS

Strengthens the activation of fibroblasts, improves cell permeability, accelerates the growth of proteins to produce elastic fibers and promotes the mechanical movement of muscles. Creates vibration at the speed of 1,000,000 times per second, which can disrupt the fat cells that are causing the cellulite to appear. Stimulating muscular movement can consume fat, sugar and carbohydrate of surrounding tissue to achieve the effect of weight loss. Under normal movement, muscle may consume 60-70 joule energy per second, but under high frequency movement, muscle can consume 3000-4000 joule energy per second.

With 5 Modes of EMS (Tapping, Massage, Knead, Scrapping, Slimming) , 5 intensity selection, choose one that make you feel comfortable and if your tolerance gets higher, you can up the intensity. Using this device regularly helps relax your muscles, burn fat, and contour your body.

How to use?

This is how you use it at home. Always cleanse you skin before application. After turning on the power, wait till red light blinks. There are 2 level of intensity – low and high. For face use only the low intensity while high intensity are used for other parts of the body such arms and legs. You can use any skin cream or body shaping cream or the recommended aloe vera gel.

I totally loved the convenience of using this device at home. These are some of the benefits when use over time.

  • Brightens skin tone
  • Eliminates fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles
  • Lifts saggy and loose skin
  • Eliminates stretch marks and scars
  • Removes stubborn fat and cellulite
  • Reduces puffiness
  • Tightens sagging skin

Priced affordably at SGD 62. It does not come with warranty but if it is faulty upon receipt, it is a one for one replacement and free shipping always. Do check out their Website for their huge range of beauty devices and beauty products.

Ergoworks – Ergo-Stars Healthy Kids Desk and Chair ES-8803-GY accompanying my child’s growth through his schooling years

Without a doubt this will be the biggest ticket item, you will buy for your primary school child would be an ergonomic table. With his older siblings having their own study table and space, small J now currently in primary 2 should also be encouraged to have a proper table and space for his increasing demands of school work and also one that will cater to his growing years.

this was his desk and chair previously, which is not ergonomic at all

The single most important question for most parents, is there a need to spend on an ergonomic table? For me personally, I see it as a long term investment, the ergonomic table and chair will see your child all the way to secondary school and beyond as the table and chair will “grow” with the child.  While we can’t change the chairs that are used in school or the demands of a computer era, I can provide a more ergonomic-friendly environment for my children at home.

The term “ergonomics” comes from the Greek words ergon (meaning “work”) and nomos (meaning “rule”) and is defined as the science of human work. In order to safeguard children’s health and ensure they learn well, rather than have them adapt to their furniture, their furniture should adapt to them.

The diagram below shows how an ergonomic table will help in creating a good and correct posture as compared to fixed height table and chair. They should not be leaning over excessively or have a rounded neck while they are seated at a desk. Ideally, the seated posture for kids follow a ‘90-90-90 degrees rule.

Even if the table and chair is at the correct height, once the child grow, you will need to change another set else creating a wrong posture. This problem is cleverly resolved with ergonomic table and chair which height can be easily adjustable.

I have been using Ergoworks ergonomic school bags for the past 6 years for all my school going kids and I can vouched to its good quality and durability. These are my ergonomic bags review post for the past 6 years , post 1, post 2 and post 3

When I decided to source for an new ergonomic table and chair set for my third child, I didn’t need to look any further as I trust their quality and make as I have been using their products for the past 6 years.

Their extensive range of products is professionally endorsed and recommended by both The Chiropractic Association (Singapore) and the Singapore Physiotherapy Association.

The set I chose for small J is ERGOSTARS – ES-8803-GY – Grey Healthy Kids Desk And Chair Set

Ergonomic features:

A good set of ergonomic furniture is one where the child sit with the feet supported (on ground or foot rest) and their knees forming at 90 degree. With incorrect posture, it will lead to all kinds of pains – abnormal bone growth, abnormal breathing, poor circulation, digestive issues, headaches and back and neck pain. By practising ergonomic from an early age, this will ensure good posture as they grow older.

The table’s height can be adjusted from 58 cm to 80 cm.The table should not be too high, otherwise they will be resting their hands awkwardly on the
table and putting unnecessary stress on them. If the table is too low, they will be leaning forward too much and more likely to round their necks or hunch their backs.

When adjusting the table’s height, make sure your child’s feet are supported, meaning that your child’s feet should touch the ground. If it is not possible, consider buying an ergonomic foot rest (for the same chair model in this set, the foot rest come attached to the ergonomic foot rest as well). The adjustment to the table height is a very simple process using the detachable lever handle.

Beside table height adjustment, ergonomic table also feature a desk that tilts. This minimises the kids natural inclination to lean forward when writing or drawing, as it allows the desk to be brought closer to them. Desktop tilt angle adjustment is from 0 to 25 degrees to eliminate slouching and strain in neck and to cater to different tasks, such as reading, writing or drawing, as it requires a different angle for the posture (0-5°  for drawing and similar activities ,approx. 10° for writing, 20°-25° for reading). Adjusting this angle depending on the task will provide your child with a better neck position, which will result in less tiredness and stress.

Extra features:

Based on personal experience, you should try to get an ergonomic table with a spacious functional integrated bookshelf. Else you have books pilling up messily or you need to buy book rack to organise the books. A study table need shelves for all the books, stationery etc else you will need another dedicated book shelf etc.

The surface non reflective prevents light and sun rays from reflecting into the child eye. With the light from the desk light reflected the light rays into the eyes can increase risk of astigmatism, myopia etc.

The table edges are design to be child safe with rounded edge bumper. Some other additional features to this table is the easy mobility ,accessible  stationery storage , bag hanger , wrist support pad that holds book and laptop and you can request for tablet/book holder as well (additional charges applied).

Certified E1 European Safety Standard, the sets are assemble locally with high quality parts sourced overseas, desk board- European standard MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) & quality powder coated cold-rolled steel, PP & ABS plastic.

Ergonomic chair

The DUOREST DR-289SR Junior Collection Ergonomic Chair  is based on Original Germany Patented Design & Technology. Its dual backrests design is professionally endorsed and recommended by both Singapore Physiotherapy Association & The Chiropractic Association of Singapore. The dual backrest design reduces pressure on the spine, follows the curvature of the spine naturally.

This chair features adjusted to the seat depth and back rest, seat height adjustment but up to 90kg in weight. The height adjustment is similar to that with the table. If the chair is too high, they won’t be able to rest their feet flat on the floor, applying excess pressure to the back of their thighs. If the chair is too low, this puts them at an awkward position and causes unnecessary strain on their knee joints.

The best part I totally loved is the detachable circular type foot rest which is removable when the kid’s feet can touch the ground.  Instead of getting a separate foot rest, this is attached to the chair itself – ingenious!

It is made of high density form to provide constant good support, high quality fabric materials to last many years, industrial grade steel & PP plastic parts, ISO certified environment friendly manufacturing facility and class 4 high quality gas cylinder for 100% safety and durability.

Beware of copies outside of Ergoworks, as they are the only company selling DUOREST in South East Asia market.

The ES-8803 table model comes with blue, pink and grey. As for the DUOREST DR-289SR chairs, it comes in blue, pink and green. I chose the combination of grey table and green chair for  a more corporate look and a more gender neutral colour which will look less kiddish as the kid grow older. Buying it as a set will also be entitled to a free gift  Philips LED Eye Care study lamp (worth $79 ) and a Made In Germany Floor Protection Mat  (worth $129 and for prevention against possible scratches & better hygiene). This value bundle set is a complete set up for the children study ergonomic workstation, value for money and hassle free for all parents.
