Design Innovation 5 day holiday camp at The Keys – Innovate with Empathy

In the day and age where kids are exposed to technology at a very young age , I have tried my very best to keep technology at bay for my kids. They have little smartphone and tablet interactions (I have never own any tablet or Ipad) and I wanted to keep it that way for as long as I can . I do know that kids exposed to cyberspace maybe be more knowledgeable, perhaps smarter but I feel that my kids will definitely catch up during formal schooling.  He maybe the most technology deprived kid as he only touched a laptop during K2 when I sign him up for a coding class with IDA. He was very lost as well intrigued by it both the laptop and the coding software during that class.

In Primary 1,  there are e-learning modules and a daily online Mathematics challenges as part of the school curriculum. I guess time has come for my boy to embrace some controlled environment of technology.

So for the past 2 schooling terms, he has been using the laptop rather proficiently with little help from me for his school work and e-learning. (back to the point kids are inherently able to pick up and learn things quickly)

And in the name of embracing technology , I am not about to open a floodgate where he plays electronic games etc but meaningful technology-based programme and classes which are outside of school curriculum. Classes for coding  is the craze now , see this Straits Time article. There are many schools and centres offering coding and robotics but The Keys holiday camp for Design Innovation caught my eyes.

There are actually 2 suitable camps for J organised by The Keys for the June school holidays – Design Innovation (6 to 8 years old) and Tech Star Junior (6 to 8 years old). I must admit that the more true-blue coding class would be the Tech Star Junior which uses Scratch software to create animated stories (J and I had a brief introduction when we attend the IDA workshop last year) but I decided that Design Innovation camp would be something more beneficial and engaging for him at this juncture. Besides using the laptop and software, I would like see a mix of “hand-based” activities which is exactly that he got at the end of the camp.

On the first day of the June holidays, J needed to wake up earlier than usual (he attends afternoon session on a normal school term) but I assure him its going to be really fun and his eyes popped up when he saw the LEGO Mindstorms EV3. He was really excited to head to The Keys every morning for the next 4 days of camp too.  The Keys is located at Odeon Towers (central location) which is good as I could drop him earlier before 9am before heading to work. Since the camp ends at 2pm, there is some arrangements needed to be made for full time working parents. I was lucky that a friend of mine has enrolled her girl in the same class and we took turns doing the picking up at 2pm.

J loved it so much that he actually incessantly requested to return for another week of camp. In fact since Day 2, he has been begging me to extend his camp till the end of week 2 of school holidays! There is indeed another another suitable camp for his age category which is the Tech Star JR which is more coding based using Scratch. Let’s say that mummy need a rest from the out-of-cycle routine and there is still the MEGA big December holidays to fill.

I guess his immense interest stemmed from the fact that this is something that he has never done before and the things with boys and LEGO.  Sorry to generalize but the girls in camp also had as much fun (testimony from my friend’s girl who attended the same camp as J). He kept raving about the breakfast challenges, who did what and who won etc and the capabilities of his and his friends’ EV3.

What I really like about these holiday camps organised by The Keys is the small age gap. Some holiday camps and workshops have age ranges from 7 to 12 years old. Speaking from a mother of a 7 year old (which is the youngest of the range), I feel that it is too wide of a range. What a 10 year old can understand may not be what a 7 year old can understand. Hence, I like that this  camp has a small age gap which is for kids between 6 to 8 years old. The knowledge and level of understanding would not be very different and the kids can discuss and relate to one another more easily.

The other reasons why I chose this over the Tech Star Junior was this camp is not all about technology ie the kids do not “play” with the EV3 thoughout the daily 5 hour camp. It is about problem solving and empathy with the daily breakfast challenges. You might be thinking why empathy. During the camp, they are required to problem solve how Tumanka (a kid from a developing country) goes to school and the kids from the same country take so much effort to go to school. This is where kids in the camp (our city kids) can form more understanding, appreciation and empathy towards children of developing countries and develop their problem solving skills.

If you read the course structure, there are some pretty big jargons throughout the course description which I can’t really explain at my child’s understanding level  – prototyping, innovation, modular design, etc. The instructors were able to bring such abstract concepts  at the kids’ level of understanding in a fun way which really amazes me. Most importantly, some level of empathy as they critically think of ways for improve the livelihood of kids in a developing country and finally build an amusement park for them as a finale to the 5 day camp.

Just to give a flavour of the Design Innovation camp that J just did with The Keys. As it is a drop off programme, the information below are based on the camp course structure , the best J has described his daily on-goings and photos provided by The Keys.

Day 1

The day typically start with a breakfast challenge where kids are divided into teams to tackle the challenge. For the first challenge, the teams are to build the tallest structure using spaghetti. This teaches them creative problem solving and teamwork.

Next up, they are introduced to the design challenge topic which will set the tone for the week long camp. They were introduced to Tumanka , a 6 year old kid from a developing country and the challenges she and her friends face when they needed to go to school. They were given problems such as reasons why Tumanka takes a long time to get to school. They were given a big piece of white paper to do mind mapping and present it to the rest of the class. This is where they learn empathy and storyboarding.

Finally, the highlight of the day, LEGO! Ok not just any LEGO but the highest end of the LEGO series – LEGO Mindstorms EV3.  By using LEGO WeDo software, the kids are required to build and programme the EV3 to pick the kids from remote villages and bring them to school.

Day 2
For the breakfast challenge, they were tasked to build a very strong bridge for the billy goats to cross in Tumanka’s village with the use of ice cream sticks and duct tapes.

They further enhanced their individual EV3 capability with more motions and actions by building an automated feeding machine to feed the billy goats – innovation in daily processes.

Day 3

They are given a task to design Tumanka’s school from paper, straws, binderclips and pipe cleaner. From the different materials, the kids will recognise constraints and come up with possible solutions.

They even had a mini field trip to IDA Labs at National Design Centre (a stone’s throw away from The Keys) to understand how people innovate in real life settings.

Last order for the day is to improve of the EV3 capabilities with another design challenge.

Day 4
For breakfast challenge, they built paper planes and the winner will be the one with the longest flight distance. The last order of the day was another design challenge and once again , the kids will do their programming on LEGO WeDo and test it out on their EV3.

Day 5

The last design challenge for the camp was to build an amusement park for Tumanka and her friends which will be later presented and showcased to the parents at the end of the camp. Each kid will do a different park ride.  J chose to make a space-shot , which he proudly shown me how it works.

Other kids designed ferris wheel, carousel, roller coaster as part of the design challenge. J also brought me around showing me his team’s design of the bridge, school and the daily breakfast challenges.

If you are looking for something different (I know my boy woudn’t want a chinese oral and compo camp) and fun and yet give your child some basic foundations to problem solving skills and some preliminary exposure to coding and programming, this camp has a bit of everything to keep the child busy for 1 week of the school holidays.

There are 2 more weeks for the June holidays to fill so do check out the various camps that The Keys offer for the holidays.

For more information about the various camps, do click here. The below camps are left with limited spots.

  • CSI week of June 20-24th: Very limited spots

SWEET by ACT3 International – We’ve been invited to a party!

We had very fond memories of our first ACT 3 workshop last year entitled Jelly, Wobble and when I saw a similar event happening this year, I knew my kids had to do it again!

Once we stepped into ION Art Gallery , the location for SWEET, we kind of forgotten that we are for a workshop. We thought we were invited to a birthday party all decked in candyland theme. As we are arrived earlier, we spend the time taking photos as everything was so SWEET and pretty! Sorry for the photos overload , but it’s just too pretty not too share.

A wall of doughnuts, a wall of inflatable giant cupcakes, a cake as tall as the kids and a ice cream making shop. I just got so inspired to do a similar theme for my girl’s birthday party next year complete with an ice cream parlour….. Sorry, I digress….back to the workshop proper. For this year’s session, the storytelling session was brought to the beginning of the session instead of towards the end. As it was a workshop inspired by the story of Charlie and the chocolate factory, the story teller narrated the famous story by Roald Dahl in 20 minutes. It was a good introduction to kids who are not familiar of the story which has a movie made for it as well. J has not read it before and its time to get add this book into his bookshelf!

IMG_5824

IMG_5831

Parents were invited for the story-telling session. There were lots of interaction with the kids and the sound effects accompanying the story-telling session make it more interesting, not a dull moment.

IMG_5836

After the storytelling session, the parents are asked to leave the venue so that the kids can be rotated between the different stations for their activities. (yay! me-time and shopping time at ION!) I do not have photos to share or much to review so what I gathered were what the kids told me or from their website. The remaining 1.5 hours were divided into an art and craft session to create colourful lollipops ,  ice cream making session which is THE highlight (and they get to eat it thereafter, I was told its Vanilla ice cream) and a drama workshop where the kids can choose to act out their favourite ice cream where they learn to move and physicallise actions through creative expression.

IMG_5889

IMG_5937

Once again, I am a big fan of the drama classes by ACT 3 especially their holiday camp. However, as a full time working mum, in order to send my kids for it , it would be mean that I had to take 5 days of leave to ferry them to the camp. That is why I especially like this genre of workshop which is a 2 hours session broken into 4 different components comprising a story telling session, art and craft session,  gelato-making session and a drama workshop. Perfect for time-pressed mummy like me and my kids still get a SWEET flavour of a drama class with ACT 3 and some inspired art and craft thrown into it. The kids remembered Princess Lolly in Jelly, Wobble fondly and told me she turned 90 this year (because last year was her 89th birthday). And this year they will remembered Charlie and his adventures and the ice cream they made and tasted!

The workshop runs till 5th June and happens only once a year in June. This year it is incorporated as part of the Art3i Festival which you can read more about it here. I really hope that ACT 3 can do a similar workshop for the December holidays! Oh, and while  I was at ION ART, I discovered that you can actually take the lift next to the gallery all the way up to the 55th floor for ION SKY which is an observation deck and its FREE!  Do bring the kids for a walkabout if you are there for the afternoon session before the workshop or after the workshop. Opened every day from 3 to 6pm.

ION Art Gallery, ION Orchard

28 May to 5 June 2016, 10.30am to 12.30pm OR 3.30pm-5.30pm

Shrek the Musical comes to town, we don’t have to catch him just at USS

Based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film , Shrek and his friends will appear live for a musical for the first time in Singapore.
When the cartoon first debuted,  I didn’t have kids .  When I had kids, I always thought they are not really “grown up” enough to watch it. But who in Singapore doesn’t know Shrek and his Fiona, all thanks to Universal Studio Sentosa. You do not need to watch the cartoon to know who is Shrek and Fiona. My kids have not watched it before they went to USS. They did watch snippets of the the show in the rides at USS and we had this memorable family photo at USS
11006_10152564012814143_2101908769999561000_n
During our road trips recently using a borrowed car, they managed catch the cartoon during the road trips and boy,  did they enjoyed it. They absolutely loved spotting all the fairy tales characters like Gingerbread men, the 3 little pigs. They may not fully understand the adult jokes, but they did understand the story enough to enjoy the cartoon at their level.
This live adaptation of the popular animation film Shrek brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favourite ogre to the stage. In a far away kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey that does not keep quiet, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand and his name is Shrek.

Shrek maybe the ugliest of all cartoon characters but thanks to the storyline, there is so much love for him. And he is always the hero.

Cold Storage Kids Run 2016 – undoubtedly the best kids run event of the year!

My (my kid) first ever Cold Storage Kids Run (CSKR) was 2 years ago when they held it for the first time at The Meadows at Garden by the Bay. J was 5 and it was his first ever outdoor run. Being my first born, I was anxious whether he is able to run continuously or give up or struggle to the finishing line. But all my fears were unfounded …he totally nailed it though we did not have such a good experience at the holding area which was situated on a slope etc. Till today, we had very fond memories of our first born’s first run!

2 years on, being my second time joining, I was very confident that even my 3 year old will be able to do the 800m walk/run – speaking like a very experienced parents – seen and done that. The only child I excluded was the baby who is 11 months old (who needed to be in a stroller category – and he hates the stroller). As the kids outnumbered the parents, it was difficult to manage so many kids with different race start timing , so we decided to just run with 3 instead of 4. It is my girl’s first CSKR and she has done a 5km Tom & Jerry run before , so i am pretty sure she will nailed this too.

We woke up real early on a Sunday morning, 6am to be exact as J’s flag off time was 7.20am for the Boogey banana sprint category. So we left the house when the sky was still dark (only other time we had to wake up so early is when we have to take an early flight) and there was a slight drizzle on our way to the venue. It was a good decision to take a cab to the venue as we did not have to search for parking and walk to The Meadows. This was the scene that greeted us upon arrival, gloomy and some earlier race categories (the older kids) had commenced despite the slight drizzle. But the sky and weather outlook didn’t dampen my kids’ spirit any bit, they were raring to run despite being pulled out from bed at 6am!

IMG_5184

IMG_5212

These scene lasted til ard 7ish am and clear skies beckon. IMG_5191

With their race bibs pinned on, they are all set to run!

While waiting for their respective race time to start, we had free Vitagen, milk , bread etc.

IMG_5210

Then the kids played some game booths near the holding area in line with the theme this year , Eat Healthy , Get Active. As you can see from the later photos, the gloomy overcast cleared up and it was bright and yet the weather was cooling.IMG_5216

IMG_5225

IMG_5219
IMG_5234

Due to the drizzle, there was a delay in J’s start time as there was race re-routing to ensure the safety of the runners or should i called them the sprinters. It is especially crucial for the sprint category as they are running alone  (without parents) and are supposed to clock their personal best.

IMG_5250

IMG_5259

And J was done with his run! Easy peasy to him though it was a huge regret that he dropped the championship chip (which records the race time), so we didnt really know how long it took to complete 800m. But I must give him props to be running alone for the first time together with all the other 7 and 8 years old!

Next up , going for his first run ever, my super star of the day , small J at 1 month shy of 3 years old!

IMG_5268

IMG_5287

I must say he is the most enthusiatic of my 3 kids. And guess what 800m was too short for him. After the race as we make our slow walk to Bayfront MRT, he told me he wants to keep running. I shall feedback to the organiser to have a longer run next year 😛

And finally, it was missy turn. I was to accompany her for her category and she totally outran me. Never mind, then I was jogging and toting my DSLR but even if i had nothing, she will totally outran me. She keep looking back and making sure I was not too far back. 🙁

Tips for new joiners next year!

  1. If you are joining in the fun run and you have kids in different race categories, the organisers are pretty fine for the different kids in different race category to run together coz hey its for fun! We should have run as a family too! With some exceptions though …read point 4.
  2. The 3 Gen Family run is also a good category to join as a family. In event, that one of the generations is absent on race day, no worries, the organisers are also happy for the remaining participants to run as well all in the name of FUN!
  3. From my own experiences and my friends, 3 years old is THE BEST age to start them as some 2 years old may still need to be carried at some part of the race etc (super good workout for parents). After saying this, I will still try baby C next year by that time he will just turn 2 for the fun run, perhaps some kids are just born to run!
  4. Even if you are late for your flag off time, you can join the next flag off. Only the sprint category cant join the fun run category vice versa.Only one category where it is pretty strict for safety reasons, the stroller fun category whereby only strollers are allowed. So if you missed that, you won’t be able to join the other race category.
  5. And if you are like me, daddy was running with small J, and myself and C was about to start my race at the holding, what happens to J? The organisers are also happy for J to have another go.
  6. Dont worry if you didn’t manage to feed the kids due to the early start , there are milk and bread given by the sponsors at site. But do not overfeed the kids, I have seen some kids vomitting at the end of the race.

That is why the organisers are very mindful to keep the the race crowd to a mere 5,000 so that there is no overcrowding and every one will have a pleasant race from the 6 months old to the 12 years old!

People do ask me why do people who join the CSKR pay to “torture” themselves, needing to wake up real early on a Sunday morning,  having parking issues, braving crowds and then the kid just run for less than 10 minutes max.

My short and sweet answer, it is a great family bonding event and great outdoor activity for the kids. It is just not so fun running on your own sometimes. The crowd and all the other kids make the whole running experience more fun. It is like marathon Kidzania-style. The kid get a feel what is like being in a marathon and cheered at the finishing line.  And hopefully this is a start to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for the kids too!

If I had one feedback, I wish the race was a tad longer in distance. I am sure many kids can even do double that distance too! I am sure CSKR will be one great childhood memory for my kids! How often do we get to run as a family on a Sunday morning!

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review and hope to be invited again next year, I promise I will bring all 4 kids down. No monetary compensation was received, and all opinions are my own.

Giveaway – Act3i Festival for the June holidays

I have always been interested in ACT3 International’s holiday camps. However, they normally run for a week and its pretty hard for full time working mums to do that as that would mean taking leave for 1 whole week so that the kids can attend their camps. Last year, myself and the kids of course had my first flavour of ACT3’s workshop called called Jelly, Wobble. It was a fully packed 2 hours of activities whereby the kids were rotated between 4 different stations of art and crafts and music and movement. It was a drop off session held at Ion Orchard (yes, shopping shopping for the mum) And the finale, the parents are allowed to sit in for a 20 minutes story telling performance with the kids.

11401025_10153079890749143_7698561825719522277_n

My kids thoroughly enjoyed the session and I didn’t have to take 1 week of leave so that my kids can get a flavour of acting with ACT3 international.  A total win-win!! Till today, they remembered Princess Lolly, the key character very fondly. I am so happy to learn that ACT3 is conducting something similar this year at the same location entitled SWEET. They even has a gelato-making session incorporated in the 2 hours workshopFor this year’s installment, it is still a drop off workshop with the 20 minutes story telling at the beginning instead of at the end.

SWEET

Step into SWEET, a dessert factory, where all things heavenly, sugared and good are made and where your children will experience a delightful and tasty time like no other!

Held in conjunction with ACT 3i Festival for Children is Sweet, an interactive drop-off workshop comprising an art exhibition, art making activities, a show, as well as drama workshop and art making activities. The programme is a brilliant learning process for the child as it ignites the imagination, inspires a multi-sensory creative process, as well as encourages artistic expression and participation. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweet will feature elements of storytelling, improvisation and even gelato-making. While the session is about using desserts to inspire art-making and to teach the values of kindness, it also highlights the importance of eating in moderation.

This atmospheric piece is a beautiful tribute to Hans Christian Andersen’s classic through the mastery of puppetry by renowned Argentinian puppeteer Omar Alvarez Titeres. In this beautiful and magical interpretation, the solo puppeteer and his puppets transport the audience back into time as they weave, spin and bathe in gorgeous lighting on a fine set to the powerful narrative of adventure, courage and love.

By ACT 3 International with Vicky Ireland, Singapore and United Kingdom
For 7 to 12 year olds
24 to 28 May 2016
Drama Centre Visitors Centre
Running Time: 60 minutes
This festival opener, written and directed by notable Children’s Theatre director and writer Vicky Ireland, will feature a cast of professional actors from Singapore, and is all ready to charm audiences with a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the Shakespearean classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Originally commissioned and produced by The New Shakespeare Company, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London in 2015, All On A Summer’s Day is an ingenious way of introducing Shakespeare to children as it has both familiar and brand new characters, music, dance and a blend of Shakespearean and modern language. Says Vicky: “Shakespeare wrote a vast body of work, and like an ocean, it can be approached from the shallows, allowing young children to explore, have fun and move forwards until they are ready to become truly immersed in the wisdom, beauty and drama of his writing. Even the youngest children can have their lives transformed by seeing a Shakespeare play.” 2016 also marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Giveaway & Review: Little Passports Early Explorers and World Edition , the making of young global travellers!

IMG_2651

Little Passports

There is something magical about receiving mails and packages. In the day and age when emails overtake postal letters, it is often nice to open the letter box to find big parcel awaiting to be opened. My kids too love receiving letters and packages in their name. Well, it was the first time they receive such a huge package for them respectively all the way from the States.  The first ever package from Little Passports is  come in form of a  little suitcase to keep all the monthly materials going forward. C had the orange suitcase which is the Early Explorers series which is suitable for ages 3 to 5 while J had the blue suitcase which is the World Edition series which is suitable for ages 6 to 10. There are many subscription boxes in the market currently. Those locally produced in Singapore are mainly targeted at art and craft especially for time-strapped parents who want to do art and craft but do not have the time, idea and creative to execute them. I have always been looking out for more knowledge-based subscription boxes (quite lacking in the local scene). I came across Little Passports from the US which is all about the world and different places – elementary geography I would say!

Little Passports is developed by 2 US mummies  to expose the children to the world at the comfort of home. Many kids may not have the luxury of travelling far and hence, this subscription will introduce the kids to the world literally without having to book a flight ticket.

Little Passports – Early Explorers (3 to 5 years old)

The first package comes also with a wall size map with content suitable for this age group.Nothing too complicated, introducing the continents and oceans. This package even had plenty of stickers to decorate the suitcase, much to the delight of C! For the first package , C is introduced to the different continents in the world. This package also come with a 20 page activity booklet to reinforce the subject matter of the month.

The second package that come a month later was in a padded envelope containing the subject for the month. For the Early Explorers, they will get to learn about the famous landmarks in the world. It came with the cutest miniatures of some of the famous landmark in the world like Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Wall of China. With the help of the world map in the first package, C is able to identify the location of each of the landmarks. All subsequent packages come with 20-page activity booklet, fun souvenirs, Flashlight adventure, trading cards , letters, photos, stickers and luggage tags.

Little Passports – World Edition (6 to 10 years old)

IMG_2654

One of the biggest differences even at its first package is the world map. Compared this to the one from the Early Explorers package, this map is more complex and has the name of the countries as well.

Similarly, it comes with an introduction letter, coloured worksheets and even a postcard.

For the next package, the World Edition introduces the kids to Brazil and some of the countries in South America.

In the same package, they also had a word puzzle whereby they are to identify the next destination which is the next package!

For the World Edition, the child can also login using a secret code to discover more fun and games online

There are many different plans for subscription. These are the prices for World Edition subscription.

world explorer package

After every package has arrived, Little Passports will also emailed additional materials to be printed out for those who are keen to do more than what has been sent over for both editions!

Check out the introduction video to Little Passports!

What I really like about subscription boxes are the idea of having a theme/topic for the month. There is no obligation to finish it in 1 sitting as it is done in the comfort of the home unlike having to attend a class.

As parents, we can also supplement the topic of the month by visiting the library and borrowing books of the same theme. For example, if the topic is on Brazil, I could borrow some books about Brazil or South America and impart more knowledge. With the subscription boxes, I have more structure in my home learning and ready materials to introduce a new country/ place/location to my kids! And this subscription also makes a excellent birthday gift from the usual toys and books for kids!

Thanks to the folks at Little Passports, they will be giving a free 3 month subscription to 1 lucky reader. The winner can choose any edition suitable for his/her child.

Please follow the steps below to be in the draw.

1. Liked mypreciouzkids.com on Facebook

2. Followed mypreciouzkids on Instagram and regram the Little Passport’s photo using hashtag  #mypreciouzkidsgiveaway

Seriousaboutpreschool’s first outing to Kidzania

Last week was the opening week for the most highly anticipated kids edutainment facility in Singapore, Kidzania. After years of anticipation, Kidzania is finally  opened its door with many corporate partners, local and international brands. My girl and I were invited by Seriousaboutpreschool’s first outing to Kidzania.

Last year, I have done a review of Seriousaboutpreschool’s online portal and its launch party which can be found in this post. If those are not familiar, Seriousaboutpreschool is a One-Stop Portal for parents to find enrichment courses, holiday programs and group activities for their pre-schoolers 0-6 years old. This is a wonderful portal for first time parents or parents who are looking to the most suitable enrichment centre for their child. For parents who have tried some of the enrichment centres, they are able to share their experiences and be rewarded! Parents can register for free here. Some of the rewards for parent’s review includes passes to Explorer Kids, Pororo Park, Hokey Pokey, Cool De Sac, Port of Lost Wonders and sticker labels from my favourite label maker, MUAkids (my review here)

Do note that this is not a complete post of Kidzania as it will require a very very long post.

13010843_10153779122549143_8423003862021259317_n

the privileged kids who get to visit Kidzania on its opening week!

Something that is very close to my heart is photography. If I can have an alternative career, I will probably be a free lance photographer. So it thrilled me to see photographer (or photojournalist to be exact) as an occupation that the kids can partake at Kidzania. Canon Singapore is one of the corporate partners in Kidzania. They manage 3 locations in Kidzania of which 2 are for printing of photos taken by the roving Canon photographers (one located inside and one located outside at the ticketing counters).

IMG_4370 (2)

This is where you get the photos taken by the Canon photographer printed at the end of the day

The final location where Canon can be found is where budding young photographers can try their hand in being a photojournalist using a DSLR or a digital camera for the younger ones.

There are two job offerings at the Canon which are photography student and photojournalist. It is suitable for kids aged 4+.

The kids trying their hands on the DSLR. This is such an opportunity as I will never let my kids touch my DSLR. I used a Canon DSLR myself for the past 7 years!

Next, they will be brought around Kidzania snapping pictures as tasked by the “employer”. And in return they get to earned Kidzos which are salary in the adult world.

For the all other “jobs”, feel free to have Canon photographers take lots of photo of your child in their uniforms. At the end of the day, you can purchase them at the Canon photo both. After SGD 60 , you can buy back all digital copies (max of 15 photo per family) which I thought was a good deal especially if there is more than 1 child. There are some occupations like the first officer, baby expert etc that parents can’t even take the photo from the outside as the pretend play facility is above ground.  These are some photos purchased at the Canon booth after a day of “hard work”.

Review – Hanuman, The Superhero Monkey

For the very first time,  I have attended one of  The Little Company’s(“TLC”) productions not knowing what to expect. Ever since the first time I watch TLC’s production, I have been very familiar and comfortable with what to expect and most instances the story line as well as they are mostly based on popular children’s stories.

Hanuman , The SuperHero  Monkey is a collaboration between TLC and Imitating the Dog from the UK. They have  chosen Monkey theme based story as this is the year of the Monkey. Last year being the year of the goat, they had the The Three Billy Goats Gruff!

For the first time, the first thing I did once I took my seat at the auditorium was quickly go through the story line with my kids especially my 7 year old. I worry he will be lost as he is not familiar with the story line and cannot appreciate it much. As for my 5 year old, I am quite sure even after I have narrated the story line, I will confuse her more, so I chose a different approach, ie just let her watch.

The story begins with the abduction of Sita, who is the wife of Rama. She was captured by the Demon King, Ravana. 5 years later, Rama looked for his childhood friend Hanuman to help him rescue Sita who once had super powers. Little does Rama know, Hanuman has lost his super powers  as he has misused them to his own benefits and caused disturbances to old folks and the weak. Rama had Hanuman put together a  team to rescue Sita. And together with Stacey, Riley , Millie and Taylor, the five monkeys form the Super Hero Monkeys who will trained to rescue Sita.

9f5ee781-12ae-46ae-9f78-d6725a35a5f7

After a feast of banana smoothie before the rescue mission, Hanuman confessed to his team that he did not have any super powers. In his dream, he met a vulture called Sampati who told him if Hanumna employs his powers to achieve good, the super hero powers will return to him. The morning after, not only did Hanuman found inner strength, the other monkeys were also impressed by Hanuman’s change and powers. Together they flew to Lanka.

Sita has been kept captive in the city of Colom in Lanka.  Like in all stories, the good defeats the evil and order is restored. I shall not elaborate further especially for those who are going to catch the show.

Imitating the Dog (UK)  is the creative brains behind of all the visual spectacles and sound effects that is seen and heard throughout the show. They used the power of projection, sound and animation to create a whole new experience even for regular theatre goers like me and the kids.

Even at the very beginning, they created an opening scene whereby each character was introduced and their names projected on the stage. Super cool effects! Just the opening credits in movies. How they move the props around the stage was seamless and effortless to create the opening scene and introduction to each character. Then, the story begins with Rama (projected on screen) narrating the introduction and how his wife was abducted by the evil Ravana. I have not really seen the cast in regular TLC productions before, and I would say they made a commendable effort for their first outing with TLC.

9cc35e25-2f9a-4768-b8d8-0f8b604901af

TLC productions are well known for their songs. There were some songs in this production and a theme song with a easy sing-a-long chorus but it is not quite at the same standard as typical TLC productions. That said it was a commendable effort given that they have to act , sing and interweave their movements with all the animations and computer imaginery projected on the stage.

All in all, with the collaboration with a foreign creative partner, a whole new dimension was brought to children’s productions. Rama appeared as a projection on the stage instead of an actual person, a clever use of props  and animation to “voice” Sampati , the vulture who appeared in Hanuman’s dream and mostly important, the portrayal of evil Demon King , Ravana. Catch the show to see how all the characters are represented in a unique way through special effects and animations supported by a real life cast. If regular TLC has become too predictable in form and story line, do catch this to see for yourself the new genre of children production using animation and technologu.

As for my kids, there were more questions asked as it is quite unlike what they are used to see in TLC productions. How did Hanuman defeat Ravana? How did they have moving eyes and talking mouth projected on the stage?

Take a sneak peek at the trailer of this production, for those who loves comic books, superhero and curious to see how digital animation is being used for theatre productions, this is The show for you.

Giveaway & Review – MOSH! Truly interactive for the little minds!

The first of its kind in Singapore, a playground of sight and sounds and all things digital and who does it better than the Japanese and this is where the technology is from. It is a collaboration of a few Japanese corporatoins to create a one of a kind playground for the lucky kids in Singapore! In the day and age where there are incessant call to breed creativity among our young ones, I believe the Japanese corporations have heard our call and jointly setup the latest digital playground in Singapore, MOSH!. It is located in Sentosa next to the Beach station, just opposite Port of Lost Wonders. It is housed in the same building as Kidzania which you won’t missed once you walk out of the Beach station car park/stop.

Located on the highest floor of the building (you will have to walk past the Kidzania entrance which was not operational yet at time of visit), we are not sure what to expect of this new playground. A little birdie told us that we can set up fireworks using movements, draw and create aquatic creatures and launch jumbo jets from you hand!

We were greeted by a colourful wall at the entrance. As we were there on a weekend, there is a 2 hour time limit to adhere to. As it was pretty new, there wasn’t much crowd on a Sunday afternoon, so we were swiftly brought into the venue. On weekend, they impose a 2 hours time limit to ensure there isn’t too much crowd and every child or adult can play to their hearts’ content.

one very huge classroom with digital sights and sound!

There are 5 installations to explore and turn the little one’s imaginations into life:-

  1. Fantasy: World of Wonder paper apps

Once the kids were escorted into a dimmed and huge “classroom”, they were quickly seated to listen to short story to give a flavour of the experiences that will come. As the room was rather dimmed and full of noise (from the installations all around), I could hardly see or hear the story. The kids were very distracted with all the ongoings and didn’t really pay attention to the narrated story. I would prefer that this short bit of story telling be done at a brightly litted room with minimal noise since it was just a mere 5 min story before the kids were escorted to the actual venue. The first installation to greet them was Fantasy: World of Wonder paper apps. They can choose any character (MOSH!cot) to colour, design, doodle, etc printed by RICOH (which is one of the corporate partners). Once they have decorated their characters, the paper will be scanned and their image will appear in the screen above.

kids are so proud to see their own MOSH!cot on the big screen

  1. Space: Fireworks Party

The next stop was where you can use body movements to raise and control fireworks. Apparently the sensor are built to detect movement from children’s height , so when I try to simulate the fireworks, it didn’t really work that well. My girl has fun just jumping and “releasing” all the fireworks and she move across the entire screen. The boys were that interested in this installation.

  1. Land: MOSH! Cot Hide and Seek

There is circular brightly litted table in the middle of the huge classroom. There is where one uses the sense of touch. The characters will all appear once you places your hands on the table and using your hands to cover the characters. The kids had so much fun playing with daddy! And the table were just at the right height even for the coming to 3 year old!

12801116_10153644190549143_5652683238457980292_n

  1. Sea: Doodle Aquarium

This is where my girl spent most of the time. On a blank card, one can draw any aquatic sea creatures or just about any creature that they imagine. Remember to fill in your name on the card (as it will also be projected on screen) for easy spotting of your creature in the larger-than-life aquarium. Once the child has completed the drawing, place the card on the doodle aquarium projector table and the card is quickly scanned and the object will appear amongst the other “sea creatures” on the huge digital aquarium. It was quite therapeutic to watch the many sea creatures in the doodle aquarium.

  1. Air : Paper plane adventure

As there were pre-folded paper planes , my boys were all too raring to go and launch their plane into the screen without having to fold their own or donning their pilot hats. The proper way is to obtain a blank coloured paper and have it folded into a paper plane. Then dressed your child like a pilot by using one of the pilot hats or pilot goggles. Then launch the folded paper plane  and watched as a plane appear to be flying following your flight path of the launched paper plane. There are also a variety of planes from propeller planes to jumbo jets and different dreamscapes such as primeval jungles and canyon caves.

I did a short video clips of the all the fun segments at MOSH! to better appreciate all the interactive moments in all 5 installations.

Visitor information:

Opening hours : 10am to 9pm

Address :  31 Beach View #03-01

Palawan Kidz City

Singapore 098008

Ticket prices : Adult $28 , Child $22 (Free admission for children below two years old), Family bundle S$48 for 1 Adult and 1 Child (Playtime of 2 hrs will apply on weekends, Public holiday and school holidays)

Yes, most parents will be taken aback by the fees charged to the adults. I guess they are also expecting tourists (being located in Sentosa) hence the fees charged for an adult. I guess there should have another pricing category where adults accompany children are at a discounted price to make it more affordable for families in Singapore to enjoy this new-age, digital playground.

And with Kidzania expected to be launched in April (just heard word that it will open on 12 Apr), my word of advice is to pay a visit when you are visiting Sentosa any time soon and when you need a shelter from the hot weather after a day out at Sentosa before the crowd descends.

Thanks to the good folks at MOSH!, we are pleased to be giving away two set of family package (2A & 2C) worth SGD 100 each set.

Cold Storage Kids Run 2016 – Eat Healthy, Get Active

In recent years, there are many kids related run events throughout the year. There are many themed runs too which attracts the young and the young at hearts. The most well known of all  and one that have been around for the probably the longest time, being in its 9th installment is Cold Storage Kids Run. The run will held at the The Meadows, Gardens by the Bay on 22 May 2016 (Sunday). This run will also feature a sports-themed family carnival.

For the first time, the run will have two child celebrities as ambassadors – Iryan Fandi and Abbie Rose Humphreys. In the recently concluded 2 day road show and pre registration event, the two ambassadors conducted a football and a workout clinic respectively inline with the theme ” Eat Healthy, Get Active”.

Iryan Fandi

There are the race category. Big J being 7 , he can either join the Happy Grapes family fun run or the sprint category (which will be timed). For younger kids, it will be a fun run categories. In the past years, the number of participants was at 6,000. For these year, they have kept it to 5,000 so that this will be a more pleasant and enjoyable run for all! And this is probably THE only run that all my kids can participate in at same time!
