Giveaway & Review – +venture in Maths magazine, when Mathematics is fun and colourful! (Part 1 of 3)

After going through the Junior Young Scientists and the Young Scientists magazines (see here for the previous review) for my two older kids (J & C),  and how light and fun reading is able to inculcate early awareness and interest in the science subject, I started to look for similar book materials -ie magazines/newsletter for other subjects in primary 1.

Besides science, I found out there are also locally published magazines catered towards Mathematics , English and Mandarin. The publisher – Add-venture Learning Pte Ltd publishes the Mathematics( +venture in Maths) and English magazine (Inspire). I will the covering the a 3-part blog series for all the wonderful products by Addventure. Firstly, I will be reviewing the +venture in Maths , followed by the Inspire and finally the Math-A-Morphosis game sets.

+ venture in Maths magazine

+venture in maths magazine is catered for primary 1 to primary 6. The magazine has 16 full-coloured issues (4 issues per term) with 2 bonus issues for lower primary and 1 bonus issue for upper primary 1. And what makes the magazine relevant is that the contents of the magazine follow very closely to MOE syllable as the magazines are written by local mathematicians. The magazine can be subscribed through the school or directly to home (for home delivery, there is an additional top up SGD 10 for delivery fee). You can check with the class teacher before subscribing on your own to save on the delivery fee and potential bulk discount. What I understand most primary school who are partnering with the publishers will offer this subscription to the students by end of Jan.  You can check out the primary schools with partnership with them in this link

I will be reviewing some of the earlier issues (in term 1) for primary 1 with J. Firstly, I wanted to find out the comparison of MOE math syllable for primary 1 for term1/2 and compared it against what is being introduced by the first 4 issues of +venture. Yes, the magazine follows closely with the current primary 1 MOE syllable and textbook.

first 4 issues of p1 magazines

Every issue is divided in 7 colourful sections and 1 bonus e practice worksheet (online)

  1. Funstart are stories on the history of Math. The first few issues introduce how Egyptians wrote their numbers. They even posted the video of the Funstart stories on their youtube channel. Even though it may not be relevant to primary 1 syllable, but it is fun general knowledge and to introduce simple mathematics based stories to the young. Even my 5 year old girl enjoyed listening to the short stories. You can view the video for the story in the first issue here to get a flavour of the short stories.

  1. Concepts

This is where the MOE syllable kicks in. The concept for that issue will be explained in colourful and fun illustratives. For example, you can see how the number bond and substraction concept is being “taught”. I have taken a step further to do a side by side comparison vs a typical assessment primary 1 math assessment book. I am sure the kids will more keen to learn from the very colourful and thin magazine as compared to a black and white thicker assessment book.

  1. Practice

Then to apply the concepts into the real work would be 2 to 4 pages of Practice.

12553075_10153535400959143_1661161375477057571_n 12509773_10153535400954143_4640197963235309345_n 12400579_10153535400939143_6315087001159075160_n

  1. Games and Puzzle

To enforce the concept even further, there will be  a page of games or puzzle.

In the first very issue, parents are tasked to help the child to make hexagon counters as manipulatives. (Do note that if you have also bought the game set, in the Number game sets there are also 20 hexagon counters which you can make use of). For those who did not buy the game sets, fret not, there is even on online tutorial to teach who to make the hexagon counters from straw. These hexagon counters will be used for games found even in the first issue!

One page puzzle also can be found in some issues which are like mazes, tangram puzzles,  number bonds etc

  1. Explore

Using the same concept taught in this issue, this one page section introduces new and function activities to further strengthen the concept. For example in the issue on basic shapes, Explore section introduces students to make their own Tangram, how a square can be made into  2 triangle and so on.

12400564_10153535400964143_506806098185006415_n

  1. Parents’ page

It is a half-a-page extra notes and pointers to parents on how to further strengthen the concept ie through the use of outdoor activities, games, daily observation, etc

10678426_10153532101169143_2096189597881087931_n

  1. Competition

This is always on the last page of each issue whereby students can complete and have to mail to the publishers. The first 20 correct entries drawn from all the entries will win attractive prizes.

p/s there are also answers to all the practice, puzzle and explore sections at the back of the issue!

8. E practice (bonus!)

There are also e-practices that can be downloaded from the website. The password for each issue’s e practise will be revealed by solving a simple puzzle or question found on the cover of each issue.

What I really like about the magazines is that it is full of colour, non intimidating, thin (16 pages)  mathematics “worksheets”. Some parents may find the concepts in the initial issues a tad too easy as these concepts may have already been covered in K2, but these concepts served as a revision and to bring a standardised level of knowledge to all primary 1 students coming from different background and preschools such child care, kindergarten etc.

As I have received the issues at home, I will let J do an issue every fortnight before the concept is being taught in school. Now it is only Term1 week 2, not much has been taught in school, so we can slowly introduce the concept through the magazine at home. So when he goes to school, he will have better appreciation and be familiar with the concept. What he is unsure, he can further check with the Maths teacher. This is also my quick read up on what is being taught in school week on week basis and term by term basis.

In most primary schools, the students are required to bring English/Chinese books for silent reading before assembly. I like to offer these magazines as reading materials for my son as it is light and thin and the short stories or comic strips can be completed in 1 sitting (they probably have 10 to 15 min to read if any). This is unlike having a thick and bulky story book, which he could probably finish just a few pages and having to carry the book to student care, then to school and back home is not something I fancy. For now, J is bringing his Young Scientist issues to school. He can now have more options such as the +venture in Maths and Inspire magazines.

The +venture in Maths magazine set is priced at SGD 37 per level which work out to be around SGD 2 dollar per copy. You can also top up another SGD 60 to obtain 2 game sets (Numbers and Geometry) to accompany the magazine set. The combination of the magazine set and the game sets is called the + venture Set which is priced at SGD 97. The game sets will be reviewed in the third and final post. For further details, do check their website

Do check with your child’s Form teacher if they have partnered with the publisher to save on the delivery fee and receive the issues through the school. As the issues are distributed every fortnight through the school to students,  it will be kept in pace with the school delivery of the different concepts. Some primary schools are also using the magazines as supplementary materials to further reinforce the concepts in a more colourful and interactive manner.

Next up will be my review of the Inspire English magazine. This magazine also can be subscribed via school or home at a price of SGD 37   for 8 issues per academic year (additional top up of SGD 10 for home delivery). As this magazine is newly launched in 2015, currently they only have it for primary 1 and are currently working on issues for the primary 2 onwards.

Giveaway & Review – introduce science fun to the very young by The Young Scientists and Junior Young Scientists

Truth to be told, I have not heard of these range of very informative and colourful science magazine until a mummy friend told me that there are science magazines locally published which cater to kids as young as 4 years old. And you can get it from Popular book store or at Popular fair…ok I should start spending more time at Popular and its book fair..but science for a 4 year old…is it abit too young?? Would they be able to understand?? I was quite skeptical until I saw the magazines myself.

Science is a subject only taught from p3 onwards (not even p1) and it is definitely not the easiest subject to be taught(IMHO) (more so for parents to teach science in a home setting but it is the most interesting subject for me in school. Frankly thus far, I have been “reinforcing” the core subjects -English, Math, Chinese especially for the p1 going boy as I refused to believe in p1 preparatory classes (on hindsight maybe I should have outsource it given that the 2 younger ones are seeking more attention from me). Science is often an after thought as it is not a subject for the first 2 years of primary school (still have time kind of mentality). However, science can be a very interesting subject especially for kids who are not so much into languages. And any early exposure can only do a whole world of good!

Young Scientists Pte Ltd (the publisher of the magazines that I will be reviewing) is the pioneer in creative publication of science in comics style.  Through this style of magazine (comic strips), it hopes to stimulate young children’s interest in science. The magazines are currently being  distributed in Singapore, Malaysia, HK and India.

12243514_10153420033114143_398699116018276711_n

Junior Young Scientist is meant for kids age 4 to 7 years old and The Young Scientist is for p1 and above. The Young Scientist is divided into different levels , Level 1 for p1 and p2, Level 2 for p3 and p4 , Level 3 for p5 and p6 and Level 4 for lower secondary. I will only focus this review on the Junior Young Scientists and The Young Scientists level 1 as they are suitable for J and C.

Screen Shot 2015-08-25 at 12.08.32 pm

Junior Young Scientists is recommended for kids from age 4 to 7. It comes in a pack of 5 issues. All the various packs and edition for this series, you can find it here.

Each magazine has 3 stories and each story comes with a page of pre-story to introduce the content of the story.

12239644_10153418882319143_2832227012142276654_n

The magazine boast big texts and colourful illustration which captures young kids’ attention easily. It is done like a comic strips with speech bubbles and makes me realise I seldom have such book of such nature (ok my kids do not own any comic books) And these magazines are the best kind of comic books that I can introduce to my kids. In between story time section, there are also game time which has activities such as colouring, matching, maze, etc before proceeding to another story. Each issue has a good amount of information through its story and interesting facts which are simple to understand for the age group from 4 to 7 years old. Nothing too “chim” and general knowledge on plants, animals, weathers, body parts can be easily introduce to the kids at a young age. I wish I know of these series when J was younger! One can use these short stories as bed time stories as well as it is not too lengthy nor wordy. It is also good for role playing for kids who can read to promote parent and child bonding.

12235130_10153418882324143_8192890653922877429_n

12249780_10153418882329143_2563589241264965445_n 12208439_10153418882444143_8135139609107494478_n

However, I did find it a tad too simple for J who is 6 plus year especially the activity pages which are more suited for C. Nevertheless there are some information that are new even to J like meat eating plants like the pitcher plants etc. For now, J reading mainly from The Young Scientists level 1 while the Junior Young Scientists issues “belong” to C.

The Young Scientists (Level 1) structure is different from the simple structure of the Junior version. It comes in a pack of 10 issues. All the various packs and edition for this series, you can find it here.  It covers a diverse range of information using comic to let readers absorb new and fun facts. There are many little facts at the bottom of the page to enforce the information on the comic strips. Besides that, they also point the parents to information on the youtube that can reinforce the learning. Unlike the Junior version, there is no activity pages. But for a 40 plus page magazine, every issue is packed with a whole lot of information. Very compact and easy to understand especially for information that J is not familiar with. However, I do wish there are some activities like crossword puzzles, filling of blanks to reinforce what has been read.

You can also purchase  at all  Popular or MPH bookstores.

You can actually keep the magazines (just like story books) for the younger kids in future. It is not like your typical magazines where you read and probably will recycle/throw. It is more like a book which can be passed on to the younger siblings or friends with younger kids. I am sure in time to come my home will have many issues of both the Junior Young Scientists and The Young Scientists. You can also start an annual subscription for 2016 issue through the website as well. There will be a total of 10 magazines which means 1 magazine delivered monthly from January’16 (#153) till October’16 (#162) 2015 (10 issues) at SGD 55.  Not sure about your kids but my older ones love receiving mails in their name.

Review – Yelly Mat , probably the smartest Mat in town

One of the must-have baby items that every household which has a soon to be crawling baby is a playmat. There are many brands of differing quality but one of the best in the Singapore are those made in Korean. The brands that I am aware of are Parklon, LG, Asobang etc and they have a few things in common, good quality and it ain’t cheap. However, this is an investment which can be used for many years and if its your first child, you will definitely get your money’s worth. I bought this Fisher Price korean made playmat 6 years ago (cant remember the brand , I believe it was LG)  when I had my first child and it seen through me through 3 babies. And except for pen doodling  and some discolouration due to sunlight, it is pretty much the same as the day I bought it, no tear in the edges etc and if my memory  didn’t serve me wrongly , I bought it for close to Sgd 200 and probably this Sgd 200 item serve me the longest and now it is in my 2 year old’s  room so that he can play his toys comfortably on the mat.

korean made fisher price mat that have served me for the past 6 years

I didn’t plan on getting another mat for baby C and thought if i ever need a mat, I will bring this from small J’s room to wherever the baby is lying, crawling etc.

Then mummy Audrey from Thelittleonesinmylife brought in a revolutionary play mat from Korea. Besides being a good quality mat (typically made in Korea) for the sole purposes for the baby to crawl, lie n do anything the baby pleases…it is also a learning mat.

12219503_10153420034944143_2233583863630206108_n

It is called Yelly Mat and it is endorse by the super cute Yebin , a cute Korean toddler very popular on social media.

12235037_10153420441964143_2910612493965464603_n

The mat is good size at 210 x 140cm x 15mmMy previous Fisher Price mat was at 11cm so Yelly Mat feel even more comfortable as it is thicker. In terms of quality , it is very much of the good quality as the mat I had for the past 6 years but this is way more comfortable being thicker. And maintaining such mat is very easy, just clean with damp cloth. If you want to be a bit more kiasu, you can wipe it with 1 round of sanitiser after cleaning with the damp cloth.

12240023_10153415818899143_4141204581826580246_n

also endorsed by my little boss baby C (the world is his oyster!)

It comes with the cutest talking pen which recognising based on optic (ie the images on the mat)  J, C and small J are the most happy when the mat arrived because they saw the cute duck talking pen (the pen come with 1 year local warranty). As this is not the first talking pen that they owned, I didn’t have to show them how to use it. Point and the pen will talk and there is hardly any time lag between images on the mat. How can I miss out that this very smart mat can talk in 6 languages ie English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese.

12208278_10153403501849143_3889225028104912688_n

just perfect size for the little hands!

Yelly Mat being a two sided play mat , this also means there is more learning to be done on the flip side as well.

catalog_english_004 (2)

I would say the side with the map was more interesting to my 6 years old as he is familiar with famous landmarks and many of the countries. There are even little quizzes on this side of the mat that J took interest in. I would say that this side of the map may be more suitable for kids age 5 and up.

The main side of the mat , the images and learning concepts are more suited for age 1 year to 4 years old. It covers a whole lot of early learning concepts like shapes, days, colours, animals, letter recognition, there are even songs selection when the kid wants some music and dance. My 2 year old loves to point at the animals and he is quite well versed with animals in English . With the mat, he can learn the Chinese name of the animals. In future,  he can also “self-learn” shapes and colours especially when I am preoccupied with the baby or when I need to spend more time with J next year when he enters primary 1.

As for my 4 year old, she loves it when it is on the Chinese language mode as she is very interested in the language after her new found confidence in speaking and reading Chinese this year. So she would want to know the Chinese pronunciation of the animals/items she does not know. The mat has become her Chinese teacher at home which obviously teaches better Chinese than myself. Here a video of my 4 kids age from 5 months to 6 years old using the Yelly Mat!

The Yelly mat set also come with a set of poster which uses the talking pen. All 6 posters are of A2 sizes and you can have them in the kids bedroom’s wall for them to learn with the talking pen. The learning concepts ranges from numeracy, animal, letter recognition to even music etc. (do note that this set of 6 posters comes free with every set of Yelly mat purchase till 31 Dec, thereafter the set of posters will be sold at SGD 20)

12274635_10153420032354143_7947242923821623125_n

6 posters in a set in A2 sizes

If this mat was in the market 6 years ago when I had my first child, this would be the preferred mat of choice. Besides giving a proper place for the baby to crawl and play without worrying that the baby may bump the head on the hard floor, this revolutionary mat has another purpose which will extend its “lifespan”. Toddlers and preschoolers can also “self-learn” from the mat as well until age 7 or older.

This is another product (just like the Brolly Sheet) which I can use for many years and for many kids. Even if you only have 2 kids, it is a very worthy buy. You can ask around with many experienced parents (ahem like myself) will tell you that the playmat is our best investment that it lasted us for many years and still in good condition to hand me down to relatives and friends.

The mat is currently retailing at SGD 399 at thelittleonesinmylife webstore. For now, there is a 10% promotion which will end at the end of this year which means the mat is now at an attractive price of SGD 359.10!

For orders before 31 Dec, you will also be getting a set of free poster! After the 31 Dec, the posters can be purchased at SGD 20.

For the direct link to the product for online ordering, click here. There is free delivery to your home for every mat order.

For those who want to touch and feel the actual mat, it is on display at TLO’s showroom at 208 Hougang St 21 #02-201 S530208. Do check before going down to the showroom at 81832426.

Review – and the Big Boy get Brolly Sheet! a potty training blog

Given that I have been through potty training 3 kids, my biggest revelation or word of advise to new parents who has not gone through this “process”….when the child is ready, the child will be ready. But then of course when the child is past 3 years old , maybe some encouragement/intervention from parents may be necessary especially if they are going to childcare as the child care expects them to be potty trained at N1.

For J and C, I didn’t wait until they were ready being first time parent/eager beaver/need to achieve milestone mentality. I started to potty train when they reach 2 years old. It was long drawn because they were not exactly ready. There were many accidents and many clean- up. At times, I will put them back on diapers and try again after a few weeks. I even bought a doll and a doll’s potty to explain to C the concept of going to the potty etc.  Finally at around 2.5 years of age, both of them were ready and were off diapers. But with small J, I had it lucky as I had a much easier process. He was very willing to tell when he wants to pass urine. Whether is it for real or not, he was very willing to sit at the potty or visit the toilet. So for small J, there were just a few accidents (probably less than 5) before he was certified day time potty trained. I didn’t need to bring out the potty training reward chart etc and it was done. Soat around 2 years 3 months, he was off diapers in the waking hours at home and at child care. I was pretty amazed that he actually “beat” his kor kor’s and jie jie’s milestones. I had expected it to be slower as my time is very stretched between 3 kids and 1 baby. So I guess for small J , he was READY at an earlier age and hence, it wasn’t a need to “potty train”.

So, now i am embarking on a new phase of training, off diapers for nap times in the day or even more ambitiously even at bedtime. J and C were only totally off diapers at night at around 3.5 years so I guess there is still “time” but I am a bit ambitious given that small J was ahead in this milestone. I have heard of kids who are completely off diapers by age 3. Imagine the amount of money saved on diapers!!

One way is of course to leave the diapers during nap time, and after a few dry diapers, it is quite safe to not have diapers at nap time. However, there will be cases of accident and bedwetting, hence this is where Brolly Sheet will come in handy for parents, no need to wash bedsheet, just wash the Brolly Sheet and the mattress is also protected as the urine will not sip through pass the Brolly Sheet.

So small J (aka the Big Boy) get his own Brolly Sheet. I have heard rare reviews of this product from New Zealand and SMT Distributor, the local distributor for Brolly Sheet was kind to offer me a set to try.

12112315_10153376395409143_3578279437998116727_n 11181862_10153376395794143_5793863357089438456_n

I had order the King Single size in pink (SGD 65.90) .It comes in 3 different sizes locally, which are Single, King Single and Queen.

BS263_Size-Chart_All for website

The difference between a King Single and a Single is additional 15cm in length of padding/coverage. A Single, the pink area will stop exactly at the edge of the mattress while a King Single goes beyond the edge (see pic below). On hindsight, there is actually no need to get a King Single as there is a SGD 5 dollar premium for the King Single over the Single.

12107227_10153368642734143_437724131299925244_n

This is how it should look all tuck into small J (aka Big Boy) on his single size bed.The wings at the side allowed for the sheet to be tucked into the mattress nicely and the sheet would not move out of place. 12096221_10153368642729143_2936144535415073556_n 12119166_10153368643034143_3893075697903687119_n

The outer material is made of cotton hence it does not fill like “plasticky” when sleeping on it. Also you may think it will have some “sound” given there is a plastic layer to render it water proof , but it is really soft just like cloth/cotton and feel just like lying on the bedsheet. You wouldn’t feel there is an additional layer or a non cotton layer. And it is not warm as the surface is made of cotton.. This is how the waterproof layer looks like…that is why as compared to those sold on Qoo10 , you can tell it is off better quality and soft to touch. The prices of Brolly Sheet are at a premium given the good quality, however, you can used it for many years and for many kids. And Brolly Sheet claims to be able absorbs as much as 2 litres of “liquid” over a period of 8 hours.

I did an experiment whereby i actually had the Brolly Sheet beneath the bedsheet and no one can actually tell there is an additional layer beneath the bedsheet. No sound, no additional thickness but ADDITIONAL PROTECTION from bedwetting.

12105773_10153368643319143_3183189507445267214_n

Small J has been sleeping on the Brolly Sheet itself, and there is no complain from him as it is soft and comfy. But the real test how good is the waterproofing.

So one afternoon, I didn’t put on diapers when he was napping. And I had my verdict. There was a big patch of urine on the Brolly Sheet but the bedsheet underneath is still dry. So off the Brolly Sheet to the washing machine and it dries pretty easily in Singapore weather as well. So if it was soiled the morning , you can have it machine washed and dried for the night’s use (on sunny days of course).

So for now, for Big Boy, it will still be diapers for sleeping hours until such time diapers are dry, and off goes the diapers and pray and hope he doesn’t wet the bed. But even if he does, there is Brolly Sheet to protect the both bedsheet and the mattress!

A tip, if the kids is very much able to go diaperless, you can actually have the Brolly Sheet below the bedsheet for the very rare incidences if they do wet their bed on days when they are totally exhausted or very deep in their sleep. Until today, C sometimes wet her bed if she is in deep sleep for many hours at night. So, the mattress is still protected, but of course, we will have to wash BOTH the Brolly Sheet and the bedsheet.  By having the Brolly Sheet beneath the bedsheet, you can actually leave it behind during each bedsheet change since it is clean to minimise work and wash (lazy mummy mode or rather time-saving tips!)

You can purchase the Brolly Sheet at the locations below or online:-

Review & Giveaway – personalised labels from Muakids

I have never used iron-on labels before…yes,  like never ..and my eldest will be graduating from preschool in 3 months time. I don’t know how I manage to survive preschool years without iron on labels but i did. The idea of having to iron and hoping that the labels stayed on for a long time doesn’t seem something easy to me. Instead, I decided to do the easy way (which is actually harder on benefit of hindsight), I sewn some markings on the collar of my pre-schoolers’ uniform. I am really thankful that the teachers at the child care have put up with me for so many years, sewing some “symbols” on their uniforms. Frankly, who can decipher any of the symbols? …and to sew all 9 characters of my girl’s name is not something that i want to endeavour as well.

12038381_10153334740344143_6187597320043599130_n

sewn “symbols”

Then came the pretty labels from Muakids. I met Jocelyn at a Sassymama monthly gathering function and she even gave sample labels to all attendees. At the same time, I was looking for labels for my p1 going son and I saw how pretty the labels were . She created  Muakids (Muak is the sound you make when you kiss somebody. Muakids can infer as Muaking our kids) after she started creating labels for her eldest child and had not look back ever since. Muakids stickers can be applied to almost anything as they are Waterproof, Tearproof and Weatherproof. I did do a quick check on the markets of the pricing for such labels, and Muakids pricing are one of the most competitive in Singapore especially if you are getting the value packs.

I received a mixture of labels from iron on labels, skinny labels , deluxe labels, dot labels, shoe labels and bag tags from the Jocelyn for my primary 1 going son and my preschoolers. For some one as clueless as me as to what labels you need for primary 1, just choose the school pack under the value pack category. It will pretty much give you a mixture of labels of different sizes good for primary 1.

lovely labels and bag tags from Muakids

Before creating the sticker labels , we will have to select the design on their website. This is a pretty straightforward process. I just ask my kids which colour and icon they prefer, as the font I will choose for them! So the kids were pretty excited to see the labels in the colour and icon that they have chosen when it arrived at my home!

Iron on labels

I was most excited to try on the iron on labels first. I bet that my child care teachers will finally be relieved of the guessing work from my style of “labelling”. With a set of instruction and a spare baking paper as part of the iron on labels pack, I tried on the preschoolers uniform. well, it is pretty easy actually. It actually fast as well. Ok its not rocket science after all….12049105_10153334740359143_1741151774762710447_n

  4. iron for a good 30 second12049335_10153334740504143_3245345034190823334_n

Let me show you the before and after photos of my pre-schoolers uniforms and iron on labels are really the way to replace conventional label by sewing! The uniforms are been given new lease of life! The best part, my kids were so happy seeing their names on their uniforms and are very happy donning their “new” uniforms.
12065713_10153334740674143_4389597375773436465_n

After being more skilled in doing the iron on labels on the old preschooler uniforms (must test run a few times in case I burn the new school uniforms), I dared to try on my son’s new crisp uniform and PE shorts. I had the uniforms purchased ahead of schedule because I heard there is a snaking queue to buy uniform on the designated day. I rather purchased the uniforms at  my leisure and try the sizes under no time pressure etc. (some mummies say its too early to buy as there is a few more months to go, but for me my son has been wearing the same childcare uniform from N2 to K2..I dont think 3 month will make any difference) So I got them from the uniform supplier directly, but I realise that I couldn’t buy the PE shirt (I couldn’t purchase the PE shirt yet as my son has not been given the house colour) . Nevertheless, I did let J tried the sizes so i can just purchase the PE shirts without trying once i received the designated house colour on orientation day.  I feel so much satisfaction from labeling J’s new uniforms that I cant wait for the school term to start! And all it took was like 30 seconds per each label, that is definitely faster than i can ever sew 1 “symbol” previously.

Bag tags

I am sure there are kids who carries the exact same model and colour bag as J. So with a bag tag, J can clearly differentiate his bag from the rest. If you have missed the review of the ergonomic school back pack from IMPACT, you can read it from this post. I am actually worried that J is so careless and nonchalant about his belonging that he brings the wrong bag home.It is no longer child care days where teachers will take care of the items for the kids etc.
IMG_1867

Shoe labels

I always admired the memory capability of preschool teachers and the assistants/aunties.They know which shoes are for which kids especially the younger ones who cant really talk etc. But with the shoe labels, there is no guessing work needed and my kids loves seeing their names everywhere on their belongings. Perhaps with labeling, they will be more protective of their own belongings (my wishful thinking for now). Please note every shoe label come with a clear protective stickers to further protect the shoe labels ( i nearly threw it away unknowingly).12039358_10153345722514143_5196926178579484204_n

And for all the other labels , you can pretty much label anything you (your kid) fancy……water bottles, books, pencil case (even pencils using skinny labels), snack containers, lunch boxes,

12065572_10153338978219143_5549948944445293657_n

And I am saving most of J’s labels for his primary school’s textbooks and stationery. On the same note, there will be a Popular book sales in early December for you ( I will shared it my FB page) to stock up on stationery in preparation for p1 and extras in the events the kiddo loses most of it in the early months.

And here something I am thinking of getting in the future,  multipurpose labels for labeling birthday goodie packs or even teachers’ day gift! And Muakids has gift voucher as well which can be given as birthday presents for those who are out of ideas what presents to buy.

pmultipurpose

And here something for mummies of primary 1 school going kids who are clueless about how to label for p1 kids’ belonging next year (only 3 more month to go…i am sure first time mummies are more kan cheong that the kids themselves), Jocelyn has kindly offered 5 set of school packs which consist of 20 Skinny Labels, 13 Basic Labels, 10 Deluxe Labels, 6 Dot Labels and 6 Multi-Purpose Labels to start the 2016 academic year (those who has no primary 1 school going kids, this pack is also good for preschoolers as well)

Review & Giveaway – A revolutionary square milk bottle by Hegen ( yes, you heard me right, square!)

I have a love-hate relationship with milk bottles. When I had my first baby,  J , I was inexperienced in latching and he had jaundice. So due to poor latching technique and advise from PD to go on 72 hours formula milk to conclude it is breast milk jaundice, he took to the bottle at an early age. Even though  I managed to train him to latch fully at 3 months old, once I went back to work, he clearly preferred the bottle over latching. Hence, J took any bottle and any teats readily over latching.

When it came to the subsequent babies, I was adamant that latching is the convenient way (and lazy way, no washing, no pumping, no sterialising) especially with more kids to take care off. So there was no bottle for the first few months so as to reduce nipple confusion (I had my mum feed milk using a syringe). And when its time for me to return back to work, C and small J would refuse the bottle and latched extensively when I am home. I changed several bottles and teats for them until i found one that they didn’t mind so much.

Now that baby C is the fourth child, I was more relaxed in terms of  bottle feeding even though latching will still take precedence. But I still waited till baby C is past 1 month before introducing milk bottle proper.

I was introduced to this range of revolutionary milk bottle created Singapore mum of 4, Ms Yvon Bock. I am sure she fully understand the challenges of breastfeeding in the Singapore context. And her brainchild created this set of revolutionary milk bottles so that mothers can carry on breastfeeding for as long as they want. The bottles are designed to minimise spillage and wastage as every drop of liquid gold is precious. And the bottle can be converted to snack containers once the baby outgrow the 150ml bottles, how ingenius!

IMG_0675

I was so excited when these arrived at my home. I love pink packaging and the packaging for teats has the prettiest pink hue (ok, not a good reason to buy) but wait till you learn about the great features of this range of bottles!

IMG_0679

PCTO Innovation

One of the benefits of Hegen is the Press-to-Close, Twist-to-open. This feature set them aside from the conventionary milk bottle. This revolutionary innovation means there is no screw thread closure. In order to open, it has to be snapped on and twisted off to minimise spillage. You can even use a single hand to open. (when you need to carry baby to make/warm milk)

Its SQUARE!

It is supposedly easy to hold for baby’s hands due to its revolutionary shape, however baby C has yet to show ability to hold bottles, so I cant vouch for this for now!

Ease of washing because its square

One of the main reasons for me being so insistent on latching the baby is simply because I am lazy. I am lazy to wash the pumps, the bottles etc. I dislike using the bottle brush cleaner to clean the milk bottles as I feel it is such a chore. So when I saw Hegen bottles, finally some one has cleverly invented a milk bottle that doesn’t require bottle brush for washing. I can have my whole hand with using a normal dish washing sponge to clean the milk bottle. Good riddance bottle brush cleaner!

Stackable breastmilk storage

The storage lids are made so that it is stackable and it can also be connected to ensure minimal use of space in the fridge/freezer. For mummies with poor organisation skills like me where my EBM bags are in different forms and sizes, this makes breast milk storage so tidy and neat!

hegen in frigde

Off-centre teat

Though it takes some getting used to, to insert the off-centre teats into the square bottle rim as compared to the usual round rim (as there is only 1 right way), the teats are created off-centre to enable baby to feed from a more upright position. This claim to lessen the risk of milk back flow which may cause mid-ear complications.  The teats comes in slow flow, med flow and fast flow.

baby hegen

Same bottle for storing and feeding breast milk

The same bottle is use for storage and for feeding. That cuts down lots of washing time as there are less bottles to be washed and sterialised.

Push buttons on storage lids

I was also wondering what are the buttons for. With the buttons, you can interconnect the storage bottles, and you can transport many bottles at one go instead of fumbling with many round bottles from the fridge to the cooler bag. This is great if you need to “transport” baby and milk to infant care or care giver. That is another great idea to help careless mummies who need to pack baby and milk to go in the mornings!

Minimal bottle changing

Under international standards for feeding bottles, it is recommended to replace feeding bottles every 6 months. However, our Hegen bottles are designed mindful of sustainability and made to last. Hegen bottle is made of Tritan which is one of the safest and most resistant materials in the infant care industry. Hegen bottle is also uniquely designed without a bottle neck hence no need of any special brush which reduce the likelihood of scratches and abrasions on the inner surface of the bottle.

Review – IMPACT Comfort Spinal Protection Backpack ergonomic school bag

Most of the parents would have gone through the stressful phase of registering their kid for primary 1 especially those with first born or kid with a different gender enrolling in a different school from the older sibling.

Now comes the fun part, preparing your kid for primary 1. One of the most expensive purchases would be the school bag. I am pretty clueless as there are many brands to choose from and the initial decision whether to buy an ergonomic bag or a normal back pack. During my times, there is no such thing as an ergonomic bag and I was most happy whenever December comes. I am normally “awarded” school bag of my choice if I did well in school the previous academic year. So buying school bag is a happy occasion for me (as I was very studious), with new bags, new books and new stationery I was always happy to welcome the start of a new academic year. I do hope my soon to be going Primary 1 eldest son will share my same sentiments.

I had school friends who do not have proper posture and slouch from carrying heavy school bags. I hope to start on a right note by choosing a suitable bag start his formal education.

A quick market survey by me, ergonomic backpack weigh from 750g to 1.2kg , and the prices range from SGD 70 to SGD 259. As J’s height and weight is smaller than average kids of his age, I was hoping to get the lightest possible ergonomic backpack without breaking the bank.

(The general guideline from Health Promotion Board (HPB) is for children to carry no more than 15 per cent of their bodyweight. In practice, that would generally mean no more than 3.5kg to 5kg for a child in the first few years of school. And generally an ergonomic school bag weighs from 900g to 1.2kg.)

I came across the range of IMPACT ergonomic backpack which are the lightest and most  affordable!

IMPACT is the only multi-awarded ergonomic brand founded in Singapore since 1997, and also the only ergonomic brand medically endorsed and recommended by both the Singapore Physiotherapy Association & The Chiropractic Association (Singapore).

These are the many models at the ERGOWORKS showroom which carries IMPACT backpacks. The complete list of their backpack models and colours can be found in this link.

IMG_0023

at the marina square show room

I will focus my review on 5 bags which are suitable for primary 1 going kids. The first model that was introduced IPEG – 0086 which weighs at 750g and priced at SGD 69.90 which is very attractive.

IPEG-086-main

The second model which one of their best sellers is IPEG -0037A weighing at 900g at SGD 109.

IM-0037A-RoyalBlue

Even though it is a tad heavier, its back support system is vastly different from the first model (0086) . The 0037A back support system feature a curved spinal support system which provide better support to the child than 0086.

Orthopedic Spinal Protection System (“OSPS”) is an award-winning patented back-care system which provides accurate support to the exact contour of the back, while effectively distributing the weight equally on the surface on the back. OSPS assist the children in achieving correct posture and reducing stress on their growing spine.

IMG_0007

IPEG- 0037A vs IPEG – 0086

Besides that, its boxy look gives more volume and has a very good organized system for books.Once you open the backpack, you immediately see all the books and items in the bag at 1 glance which is the mainly selling point of this model! It comes with book divider with inner suspension strap and non-slip base.

IMG_0004

The model IPEG – 0050A and 0052 A are both slightly bigger than 0037A and priced at SGD 119. The 3 models are very similar in term of design

IMG_0005

0037A, 0050A, 0052A (and comes in 3 colours shown)

And the only difference between 0050A and 0052A is the way the backpack is being opened. The only benefit of 0052A is once you open you are able to see the timetable at the top as compared to at the bottom. However, it really depend on your child which way he/she prefers.

0050A vs 0052A

All 3 models (0037A, 0050A and 0052A) comes with parachute ring for easy adjustments by the child.

Besides that, these 3 models also feature

1. Chest Stabilization Strap

2. Fitted with USA 3M Scotchlite reflective materials and strap used for better safety at night or low light

3. Made of durable, water and UV resistant materials

4. Adjustable mesh side pocket designed for water bottle.

5. Side pocket provides extra storage of smaller items.

The final model which I thought was great for taller children above 110cm which has adjustability in height is IPEG-00220/221/222 priced at SGD 129. It has a cool feature whereby you can adjust the backpack according to the height of the user. However, it is a tad heavier at 1.1kg and is a longer in height bag than the previous models which is not suitable for J.

The most important thing to note is that the bag should be align to the shoulder of the child. The backpack should not be significantly wider than the shoulders for a proper fit .The base of the backpack should be not lower than the top of the hip bone.

IMG_0041

And you must always place your backpack at the same level as your back, never place the backpack at higher level than the child’s shoulder or to be worn from the floor level. And you must bring along your kid when you select the backpack so that the knowledgeable sales staff can assist you in making the correct decision and choice based on the height and built of the child.

J carried the sample bag with books in it, though it felt heavy (probably he hasn’t carried such weight before ever) but he said that it felt comfortable on the shoulder during the short time he was “parading” in the shop.

And J made his choice!

IMG_0027

IPEG-0052A

IMG_0039

cant believe my firstborn going to primary school

And the backpacks all come with a 6 month warranty which is registered at the shop.

Besides ergonomic backpacks, ERGOWORKS also sells accessories as such water bottles/ drink ware and stationery case which are great for school and also ergonomic study table and chairs for kids and adults. This is really a one stop shop to prepare for primary school education!

IMG_0026 IMG_0025There are further discounts for the following

– trade-in of used Impact bags (20%)
– Passion (15%)
– Safra and Cordlife members (15%)

means you can even get an ergonomic backpack for less than SGD 100!

Review – Love to Swaddle UP 50/50 by Love to Dream

Truth to be told, my first born was never swaddled and was very poor in the sleep department. We even had a video of how he struggled and cried while being swaddled to convince his inexperienced parents that swaddling does not work for him. Boy, was I wrong?

Since my #2 child newborn days, I swaddled her using receiving blankets. Though it wasn’t very tight and her arms will always be out after a while, it improved her sleep in comparison to her older brother. From then on,  I was convinced that all newborns MUST to be swaddled to get better sleep, whether the baby like it or not.

Then came no 3. I invested in a set of super soft and light aden & anais muslin swaddle cloths, which I still use for baby C now. But no matter how tightly I swaddled the baby, the swaddle will go into “bat wing” style (see pic).

993894_10151581908029143_882846097_n

Then came baby #4, baby C. I knew of specialised swaddling sacks like Woombie even during #3 time.  But I was very much put off by the price and the short usage period (probably need to swaddle till 4 months old) And I thought it was more gimmicky than functional. Then during my boring confinement days, I saw a video produced by Woombie, a cartoon video showing how to swaddle sacks make happy babies and happy parents, so for my sanity to get more sleep as I am handling 4 kids now, I decided to go against my rational mind and just purchase it out on a whim. Even with the discount of 20% on Lazada, I still find a pinch as it cost me over SGD 40 plus especially the size could only hold up to 6kg.  As i speak now, baby C has not even hit 2 months old, and he is already outgrowing his Woombie.IMG_5005 (2)

I do feel somewhat I get better sleep quality for him (and for me) after Woombie came into our lives. But with just 1 swaddling sack, it is not enough to go around as it need to be washed and couldn’t dry in time.

So I decided to look into other possible brands and I bumped into an even more versatile product by Love to Dream, one which is convertible into a sleeping bag when baby passes the swaddling stage. Love to Dream does have its pure swaddle range for newborn (ie not convertible). One major difference between Woombie and Love to Dream is the position of the arms. For Love to Dream, they believed the arms should be swaddled UP while most are brands including Woombie swaddled closed to the body including the traditional method of using swaddling cloths/muslin. Between either method, I am quite indifferent in terms of the quality of sleep and I am actually quite surprised baby’s arm can be swaddled in an upward position. With Love to Dream, the arms are free to move to a small extent without losing the feeling of security. Take a look at the video from Love to Dream.

https://vimeo.com/94282953

The version that i have gotten is the LITE version and it has the prettiest multi-coloured stripes (0.3 TOG) which is perfect for Singapore weather. Baby C normally sleep in non air-conditioned room and on warmer night air-condition is set around 26-27 degree Celsius. This LITE version is just perfect! My baby doesn’t perspire even if I just have the ceiling fan switched on for the night.

And the additional bonus for the 50/50 version it can be used beyond swaddling stage by removing the zippers on the arms to create arm holes for the sleeping blanket…double yay especially it cost between the range of SGD 50 to SGD 60 for an item which can be used for a few months. The versatility of it being a sleeping blanket can extend its usage for another few more months. I was given a size M which is from 6kg to 8.5kg. Even though baby C has not reached 6 kg yet, he fits really well on the upper part but it is just longer in length.

I really regretted not investing in specialised swaddle sacks for my other kids. Though it may have a short life span and it is quite pricey given its short life span, but for better quality of sleep for both baby and mummy, it is definitely worth every dollar its worth.

Love to Dream range of swaddles can be purchased online and at these retailers

Review and Giveaway – The one and only COMPLETE carrier by Lille Baby

6 years ago, when I had my first child, the only popular and well known brand was Baby Bjorn. I was gifted a black basic Baby Bjorn carrier and it lasted me for 5 years, over 3 babies, used between 1 month to 11 month old. I normally stopped baby wearing when the baby starts to walk…mainly due to the weight and baby who just started walking don’t wanna be carried.

I started to feel the weight on my back and shoulder especially as the baby weight gets heavier and during long hours especially when I had my third child. It isn’t the best Soft-Structured Carrier (SSC) in the market as it doesn’t have a hip seat and a proper back support system. The material was warm and the base is too narrow for proper hip placement of the baby.

Fast forward 2 years ago, the SSC market has seen many new entrants like Ergo and Manduca , boasting excellent support system and many has hip seat to reduce the weight on mummy’s shoulder and back.

And now the most popular is Tula as this range of SSC boast a variety of fabric , colour, texture and high resale value and it ranges from anything from SGD 200 to SGD 1k depending on the popularity  and quality of fabric etc. (Tula fans please correct me if I am wrong as I am not a Tula fan)

To me, to be spending anything more than SGD 200 for an item that last me less than 1 year does not justify (Tula’s fan will say there is high resale value and demand)

My search for a replacement my old trusty but poor-in-support Baby Bjorn brought me to this little known brand in Singapore called Lille Baby. This SSC boast 6 different baby wearing position and comes in mesh which is suitable for Singapore weather and it costs less than SGD 200! For those who love special print, they also have in the tokidoki print (especially for Ju Ju Be fans…imagine having tokidoki Ju Ju Be bag with this carrier!)

IMG_8432 IMG_8433

Why is it called COMPLETE?  The designer has design a SSC that is COMPLETE in every way, complete in comfort, functionality, safety and style! That to me, it is a pretty big representation, and to me it sounded like an almost perfect SSC!

What is great about the Lille Baby COMPLETE Airflow?

1. No need a special infant insert unlike some well known brand

For infant below 3 month  old, for most SSC, they are required to buy an infant insert. Per the instruction booklet, for infant, it is recommended to roll a nursing blanket into a “seat”. No need to purchase additional infant insert which has a very short lifespan.  The video shows how to use the carrier with a young baby with just any nursing blanket we can find at home.

2. An additional lumbar support attachment

This is a great feature not found in the more popular SSC. I think this lumbar support give me the perfect support to balance, maintain proper posture and spinal curve. Having the lumbar support bring babywearing to a higher level of comfort ! And it is created as an accessory meaning it can be removed if you are out on a hot sunny day so that you can have more ventilation.

3. Ability to change from narrow to wide seat base

The ability to adjust the seat between narrow and wide depending on the which of the 6 possible baby wearing ways. For now , I am doing the fetal carry which uses a wide base.

4.    Harness strap in carrier (for infant)

Good to have for additional security but not a must have though.

5.    Super padded straps

Having used the basic Baby Bjorn which has very little padding on the shoulder straps, using the Lille Baby is a much welcome change. After hours of babywearing, I don’t feel a slight strain on my shoulder. It maybe abit warmer due to the padding but I rather sweat a little more than to having strained shoulders.

6. An adjustable neck support and removable hood

It  cradles baby’s head or heightens the torso by several inches. And with it comes  with a removable hood (mesh material) which is great for sunny weather and also when I am nursing on the go. The hood creates a perfect cover up!

7.  No baby wearing gap

It never occurred to me that my newborn and older toddler could use the same carrier, but with Lille Baby I can as it is suitable from 3 to 20kg!  Hence, there is no baby wearing gap ie there isn’t a need to buy a baby carrier and a toddler size carrier.

8. Six carrying positions

I have only used it for a short while hence unable to form an opinion when the baby grows heavier and using the other 5 baby wearing positions , but I foresee I have a winner here which will see me through past  1 year.  I am actually eyeing on the tokidoki carry on range which is suitable for 12 month and above. Since baby C is my last baby, I may babywear him a bit longer especially with an excellent SSC which supports the baby without having sore back and shoulder!

Review and Giveaway: Worry-free luxury from Original Sprout – to me its just heavenly

The kind folks at Original Sprout send me a package right after I informed them the birth of baby C. The very next day , this was sent to me. (Its always nice to hear door bells bringing gifts for the newborn to break the monotony of staying confined at home 24/7.) Baby C is so blessed to be trying out this range of worry-free luxury.

11412329_10153098487074143_6180077898322174102_n

Previously, I have used California Baby and Mustela for my newborns. I think being newborns they should only get the best in skin care (I dont really care about the price as the baby’s consumption of skin care is low especially with the cases of Johnson & Johnson) Most importantly it must be gentle and chemical free for their delicate skin.

How does these range compared to those i have used before?

Baby C started using the Hair and Body Babywash since he returned from hospital.

Here’s the baby C all ready for bath time…

As my mum worked up a lather, i can smell a very sweet and heavenly smell. According to the label on the bottle, its a mix of Calendula, Cucumber, Rosemary and Arnica. It is easy to rinse off on hair and body leaving the body feel clean and soft and smelling so good! (newborns smell great to begin with). According to the label, this wash is also good for clearing cradle cap and dry scalp. My other kids had this and i had to buy special hair shampoo to help manage the cradle cap. Crossed fingers for now baby C doesn’t seem to have it, but if it ever occur, i hope this wash will clear it too!

After bath, baby C tried the Scrumptious Baby Cream which leave the skin soft and moist. It doesn’t leave an oily residue on the baby nor on my hands. And similar to the wash, it smell heavenly.

My 4 year old girl uses the Natural Shampoo, Deep Conditioner and the Miracle Detangler for her long locks.

The shampoo is non-drying and with a small application of conditioner, her hair is soft and smooth. Frankly, there really isn’t a need to use the Miracle Detangler as the shampoo and conditioner make the hair really easy to comb. I only use it in the morning (as she has a messy hair after waking up) before tying her hair for school so that its easy to comb n tie.

Original Sprout is currently available at Watsons, Kiddy Palace, Motherswork and 1010 Mother & Essentials.

Disclosure: We were given Original Sprout products to review. No monetary compensation was received and all opinions here are our own.
