Safari Zoo Run 2017 : Run for Wildlife (giveaway – ended)

Media invite

If you have been following my blog, you would know that my radar goes way high high up when there is a kids sporting event. With the annual Cold Storage Kids Run as a must do every year and I just started the older kids on their first Spartan Junior Race (this will be a must do as well from now on), we are always looking to keep the kids active and “sporty”. We are going to start the new year with the Safari Zoo Run. Which kids do not love the zoo? I have lost count of the number of times we went to the zoo that i can practically memorize the location of the animals but it is and always will be their favourite place to visit, rain or shine. The team at Wildlife Reserves Singapore does a wonderful job keeping their parks interesting with activities like Safari Boo (if you saw my instagram photos  in Oct you will know how much fun we had) and their yearly Safari  Zoo Run. Did you know that the Safari Zoo Run was conceived to commemorate Ah Meng, the famous Orangutan who died of old age in 2008?  To be able to do a sporting events in the heart of the zoo, well, that is going to be one notch above what they have experienced at the zoo!

For the 2017 edition, themed “Run for Wildlife”, the run focuses on raising awareness for wildlife conservation with the introduction of 4 animal icons, namely Ah Meng the Orangutan, Chawang the Asian Elephant, Canola the Manatee and Sunny the Hornbill.  Each animal icon team supports an endangered wildlife species that we would like to raise awareness for. Each runner get to choose which icon they will be supporting!

This will be our first ever “long-distance” family run, I am still undecided whether to do the 2.5km family dash or challenge my older kids for the 5.5km family run (details below).

Let me share with you some pictures from  last year’s race. I am all excited even though race day is 3 months from now!

However,  do note that for safety reasons, for all family run,  each child participant need to be accompanied by an adult participant. This is especially important for big family like mine where kids outnumbered adults, or perhaps J can run on his own for the 2.5km kids dash!

The Magic Paintbrush by ITheatre- with Giveaway of 3 pair of passes

For its final production  of the year, I Theatre has taken a well-known and well-loved Chinese folk tale (first staged back in year 2000), adds a multitude of marvellous, madcap characters, stirs together with a highly talented cast of established local actors, and bright newcomers, and then fill the whole thing with a host of lively, memorable tunes, slapstick comedy, and just a dash of suspense.

Toni Lee, a youngster from present-day Singapore is struggling with the pressures and stress of schoolwork and parental expectations. With an accidental wish, Toni quite unexpectedly meets a Magical Paintbrush, and is transported back in time to a Southern Province of China, where Toni becomes Ma Liang. In a series of magical adventures, Ma Liang’s story unfolds.

magic-4-700x819

Meet the tuneful Phoenix who guides and helps Ma Liang with his quest. Watch out for the comical Palace Guards, Sotong and Shrimp, as they try to capture Ma Liang for the cruel, greedy Emperor and his wicked schemes!

Through the fun and laughter, a clear and strong moral message about the value of creativity, friendship, and the dangers of using, or abusing power is presented in this magical, musical family show. The play is presented in English.

Spartan Junior Race 2016 (29 and 30 Oct) with giveaway – GET READY FOR THE MOST FUN KILOMETRE IN THE WORLD

Media invite

My family is big on outdoors but I am totally guilty of not exposing my 4 kids to the outdoors on a more regular basis. It often take an event like the Cold Storage Kids Run to “force” me to bring the kids outdoors. Of course with events, it is always more  fun to have other kids “race” together. When I first heard of the Spartan Junior Race last year, it was after the event where I saw some pictures of kids as young as 4 years old doing really adventurous stuff, like scale a wooden slanted wall, crawl under ropes, walk on narrow planks and I told myself, my older kids got to join this. I as an adult lack in fitness and confidence to join the adult version, but there is no stopping my kids from joining the Spartan Junior Race! Here are some pictures of last year’s Spartan Junior Race.

The Spartan Race was created by Joe De Sena,  a world-class adventure racer in the green mountains of Vermont. It is not just an obstacle-based race, but it has become a way of life to many who have joined the race. The founder has been advocating a lifestyle  – a healthy lifestyle by simple and achievable activities like waking up early, taking the stairs instead of the escalators, eating right by avoiding processed food and eat only when you are hungry etc. With 130 events in 15 countries and 6 continents in 2014, Spartan Race is available to most everyone in the world, and it landed on our shores late last year in 2015.

Currently there are 5 types of Spartan races in Singapore- The Spartan Sprint, The Spartan Super,The Spartan Beast, Spartan Trifecta and the Spartan Junior Race. And the very latest for the adult edition will be Spartan Stadium Race which is happening on the same dates and location as Spartan Junior Race this October (details below).

Though its just a mere 1 km for my kids aged 5 and 7 , but it is unlike typical kids fun run, there are many obstacles to clear along the way (many of which my kids have never attempted before).  It is not just about completing the 1km race, but to challenge and clear each obstacle as it comes and never give up! The Spartan Junior Race was created to help young athletes of all athletic abilities foster a life-long commitment to fitness and health. The Spartan Junior Race will provide an opportunity for kids to develop and test their fitness in an exciting, outdoor environment where having fun and getting dirty is mandatory.

On 29 and 30th October 2016 (the Deepavali weekend, for those of us who are not taking a short vacay and planning for a day outdoors, pen this in!), the Spartan Junior Race will be held at Yio Chu Kang Stadium! Currently, the early bird is at SGD 48 per child, thereafter it will be SGD 55 per child. Do register at https://register.chronotrack.com/r/22316

Little Star by I Theatre (giveaway of 1 pair of tickets for 27 Aug 2.30pm show)

If I were to ask any parents , what was the first song that you sang to your kids. I am sure it will be Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Be it the English and Mandarin version, this song is a perennial favourite. I am sure my kids will also sing the first song to their kids. Now my 13-month-old is also enjoying this song where he will open and close his fists to the tune of the song.

Little Star, based on the very famous nursery rhyme, will be a highly visual and interactive production, with wonderful tunes, but minimal dialogue, exploring the wonders of the universe, and the joy of re-discovering your home and family. I am hoping to introduce the wonderful world of live kids production to my 13 month old through something he can recognised with……..the STAR!

TLS015-LandscapeWEB-670x415

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,

How I wonder what you are…

Little Star sits in the sky. She sees the other stars, the Moon, the Earth, the planets.

And she wonders…

“What am I? Who am I? Where do I belong?”

When a comet passes by, she hitches a ride, and her adventures begin.

Follow Little Star through space, down to earth and even under the sea, as she tries to find her place in the universe.

Will you help Little Star find her way back home before the sun rises?

Giveaway – Act3i Festival for the June holidays

I have always been interested in ACT3 International’s holiday camps. However, they normally run for a week and its pretty hard for full time working mums to do that as that would mean taking leave for 1 whole week so that the kids can attend their camps. Last year, myself and the kids of course had my first flavour of ACT3’s workshop called called Jelly, Wobble. It was a fully packed 2 hours of activities whereby the kids were rotated between 4 different stations of art and crafts and music and movement. It was a drop off session held at Ion Orchard (yes, shopping shopping for the mum) And the finale, the parents are allowed to sit in for a 20 minutes story telling performance with the kids.

11406441_10153079889164143_2517893670066415919_n 10421506_10153079890239143_7642059814838576351_n

11401025_10153079890749143_7698561825719522277_n

My kids thoroughly enjoyed the session and I didn’t have to take 1 week of leave so that my kids can get a flavour of acting with ACT3 international.  A total win-win!! Till today, they remembered Princess Lolly, the key character very fondly. I am so happy to learn that ACT3 is conducting something similar this year at the same location entitled SWEET. They even has a gelato-making session incorporated in the 2 hours workshopFor this year’s installment, it is still a drop off workshop with the 20 minutes story telling at the beginning instead of at the end.

SWEET

13103305_993017197419489_5934518061019295066_n

Step into SWEET, a dessert factory, where all things heavenly, sugared and good are made and where your children will experience a delightful and tasty time like no other!

Held in conjunction with ACT 3i Festival for Children is Sweet, an interactive drop-off workshop comprising an art exhibition, art making activities, a show, as well as drama workshop and art making activities. The programme is a brilliant learning process for the child as it ignites the imagination, inspires a multi-sensory creative process, as well as encourages artistic expression and participation. Inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweet will feature elements of storytelling, improvisation and even gelato-making. While the session is about using desserts to inspire art-making and to teach the values of kindness, it also highlights the importance of eating in moderation.

A visual arts sense-sibility exhibition, workshop and storytelling session

ION Art Gallery, ION Orchard

28 May to 5 June 2016, 10.30am to 12.30pm OR 3.30pm-5.30pm

SWEET has been incorporated as part of ACT3’s newly launched  called ACT3i Festival coincidentally during the June school holidays (24 May to 5 June) whereby they have brought in 6 international and inspiring theatre performances that will include works from Singapore, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, the U.K. and Canadaa for kids age 2 to 12 years old.

Drama Centre Black Box
Running Time: 40 minutes
A deliciously tactile performance that blends poetic movements with circus-based actions, Marmalade is the first collaboration between choreographer Claire Parsons and juggler Viktor Gyllenberg. The characters look at the world through the five senses as they invite audiences to feel, taste, and think about what marmalade can be.

2. Hanà e Momò
By Principio Attivo Teatro, Italy
Created and directed by Cristina Mileti and Francesca Randazzo
For 3 to 8 year olds
31 May to 5 June 2016
Drama Centre Visitors Centre
Running Time: 60 minutes
A beautifully constructed piece surrounding two friends – Hanà and Momò – named after the Japanese word for ‘flower’ and ‘peach’ respectively – and the development of their relationship, which begins as rivalry and culminates as friendship. Using simple and natural materials such as sand, paper, wood and bamboo to symbolise different characters, the actresses invite the audience into their childhood world. All will be mesmerised at how so much can be related with very little, and how actors, movement props and audience meld within this performance.

3.Snow White
By DuffleBag Theatre, Canada
For 4 to 8 year olds
24 to 29 May 2016
Drama Centre Theatre

There is never a dull moment at a DuffleBag production, where new adaptations of fairy tales and Shakespearean classics meet plenty of humour and with a dramatic twist at the end. Audiences are always invited to join in the action and feel the excitement of living a fairy tale. Armed with an original script that is sharp, well-paced and full of surprises, the talented actors are very adept at changing characters and engaging a young audience.

6. All On A Summer’s Day
By ACT 3 International with Vicky Ireland, Singapore and United Kingdom
For 7 to 12 year olds
24 to 28 May 2016
Drama Centre Visitors Centre
Running Time: 60 minutes
This festival opener, written and directed by notable Children’s Theatre director and writer Vicky Ireland, will feature a cast of professional actors from Singapore, and is all ready to charm audiences with a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the Shakespearean classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Originally commissioned and produced by The New Shakespeare Company, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London in 2015, All On A Summer’s Day is an ingenious way of introducing Shakespeare to children as it has both familiar and brand new characters, music, dance and a blend of Shakespearean and modern language. Says Vicky: “Shakespeare wrote a vast body of work, and like an ocean, it can be approached from the shallows, allowing young children to explore, have fun and move forwards until they are ready to become truly immersed in the wisdom, beauty and drama of his writing. Even the youngest children can have their lives transformed by seeing a Shakespeare play.” 2016 also marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Giveaway & Review: Little Passports Early Explorers and World Edition , the making of young global travellers!

IMG_2651

Little Passports

There is something magical about receiving mails and packages. In the day and age when emails overtake postal letters, it is often nice to open the letter box to find big parcel awaiting to be opened. My kids too love receiving letters and packages in their name. Well, it was the first time they receive such a huge package for them respectively all the way from the States.  The first ever package from Little Passports is  come in form of a  little suitcase to keep all the monthly materials going forward. C had the orange suitcase which is the Early Explorers series which is suitable for ages 3 to 5 while J had the blue suitcase which is the World Edition series which is suitable for ages 6 to 10. There are many subscription boxes in the market currently. Those locally produced in Singapore are mainly targeted at art and craft especially for time-strapped parents who want to do art and craft but do not have the time, idea and creative to execute them. I have always been looking out for more knowledge-based subscription boxes (quite lacking in the local scene). I came across Little Passports from the US which is all about the world and different places – elementary geography I would say!

Little Passports is developed by 2 US mummies  to expose the children to the world at the comfort of home. Many kids may not have the luxury of travelling far and hence, this subscription will introduce the kids to the world literally without having to book a flight ticket.

Little Passports – Early Explorers (3 to 5 years old)

The first package comes also with a wall size map with content suitable for this age group.Nothing too complicated, introducing the continents and oceans. This package even had plenty of stickers to decorate the suitcase, much to the delight of C! For the first package , C is introduced to the different continents in the world. This package also come with a 20 page activity booklet to reinforce the subject matter of the month.

The second package that come a month later was in a padded envelope containing the subject for the month. For the Early Explorers, they will get to learn about the famous landmarks in the world. It came with the cutest miniatures of some of the famous landmark in the world like Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Wall of China. With the help of the world map in the first package, C is able to identify the location of each of the landmarks. All subsequent packages come with 20-page activity booklet, fun souvenirs, Flashlight adventure, trading cards , letters, photos, stickers and luggage tags.

There are many different plans for subscription. These are the prices for Early Explorers subscription.

Little Passports – World Edition (6 to 10 years old)

IMG_2654

One of the biggest differences even at its first package is the world map. Compared this to the one from the Early Explorers package, this map is more complex and has the name of the countries as well.

Similarly, it comes with an introduction letter, coloured worksheets and even a postcard.

For the next package, the World Edition introduces the kids to Brazil and some of the countries in South America.

In the same package, they also had a word puzzle whereby they are to identify the next destination which is the next package!

For the World Edition, the child can also login using a secret code to discover more fun and games online

There are many different plans for subscription. These are the prices for World Edition subscription.

After every package has arrived, Little Passports will also emailed additional materials to be printed out for those who are keen to do more than what has been sent over for both editions!

Check out the introduction video to Little Passports!

What I really like about subscription boxes are the idea of having a theme/topic for the month. There is no obligation to finish it in 1 sitting as it is done in the comfort of the home unlike having to attend a class.

As parents, we can also supplement the topic of the month by visiting the library and borrowing books of the same theme. For example, if the topic is on Brazil, I could borrow some books about Brazil or South America and impart more knowledge. With the subscription boxes, I have more structure in my home learning and ready materials to introduce a new country/ place/location to my kids! And this subscription also makes a excellent birthday gift from the usual toys and books for kids!

Thanks to the folks at Little Passports, they will be giving a free 3 month subscription to 1 lucky reader. The winner can choose any edition suitable for his/her child.

Please follow the steps below to be in the draw.

Giveaway & Review – MOSH! Truly interactive for the little minds!

The first of its kind in Singapore, a playground of sight and sounds and all things digital and who does it better than the Japanese and this is where the technology is from. It is a collaboration of a few Japanese corporatoins to create a one of a kind playground for the lucky kids in Singapore! In the day and age where there are incessant call to breed creativity among our young ones, I believe the Japanese corporations have heard our call and jointly setup the latest digital playground in Singapore, MOSH!. It is located in Sentosa next to the Beach station, just opposite Port of Lost Wonders. It is housed in the same building as Kidzania which you won’t missed once you walk out of the Beach station car park/stop.

Located on the highest floor of the building (you will have to walk past the Kidzania entrance which was not operational yet at time of visit), we are not sure what to expect of this new playground. A little birdie told us that we can set up fireworks using movements, draw and create aquatic creatures and launch jumbo jets from you hand!

We were greeted by a colourful wall at the entrance. As we were there on a weekend, there is a 2 hour time limit to adhere to. As it was pretty new, there wasn’t much crowd on a Sunday afternoon, so we were swiftly brought into the venue. On weekend, they impose a 2 hours time limit to ensure there isn’t too much crowd and every child or adult can play to their hearts’ content.

one very huge classroom with digital sights and sound!

There are 5 installations to explore and turn the little one’s imaginations into life:-

  1. Fantasy: World of Wonder paper apps

Once the kids were escorted into a dimmed and huge “classroom”, they were quickly seated to listen to short story to give a flavour of the experiences that will come. As the room was rather dimmed and full of noise (from the installations all around), I could hardly see or hear the story. The kids were very distracted with all the ongoings and didn’t really pay attention to the narrated story. I would prefer that this short bit of story telling be done at a brightly litted room with minimal noise since it was just a mere 5 min story before the kids were escorted to the actual venue. The first installation to greet them was Fantasy: World of Wonder paper apps. They can choose any character (MOSH!cot) to colour, design, doodle, etc printed by RICOH (which is one of the corporate partners). Once they have decorated their characters, the paper will be scanned and their image will appear in the screen above.

  1. Space: Fireworks Party

The next stop was where you can use body movements to raise and control fireworks. Apparently the sensor are built to detect movement from children’s height , so when I try to simulate the fireworks, it didn’t really work that well. My girl has fun just jumping and “releasing” all the fireworks and she move across the entire screen. The boys were that interested in this installation.

  1. Land: MOSH! Cot Hide and Seek

There is circular brightly litted table in the middle of the huge classroom. There is where one uses the sense of touch. The characters will all appear once you places your hands on the table and using your hands to cover the characters. The kids had so much fun playing with daddy! And the table were just at the right height even for the coming to 3 year old!

12801116_10153644190549143_5652683238457980292_n

  1. Sea: Doodle Aquarium

This is where my girl spent most of the time. On a blank card, one can draw any aquatic sea creatures or just about any creature that they imagine. Remember to fill in your name on the card (as it will also be projected on screen) for easy spotting of your creature in the larger-than-life aquarium. Once the child has completed the drawing, place the card on the doodle aquarium projector table and the card is quickly scanned and the object will appear amongst the other “sea creatures” on the huge digital aquarium. It was quite therapeutic to watch the many sea creatures in the doodle aquarium.

  1. Air : Paper plane adventure

As there were pre-folded paper planes , my boys were all too raring to go and launch their plane into the screen without having to fold their own or donning their pilot hats. The proper way is to obtain a blank coloured paper and have it folded into a paper plane. Then dressed your child like a pilot by using one of the pilot hats or pilot goggles. Then launch the folded paper plane  and watched as a plane appear to be flying following your flight path of the launched paper plane. There are also a variety of planes from propeller planes to jumbo jets and different dreamscapes such as primeval jungles and canyon caves.

I did a short video clips of the all the fun segments at MOSH! to better appreciate all the interactive moments in all 5 installations.

Visitor information:

Opening hours : 10am to 9pm

Address :  31 Beach View #03-01

Palawan Kidz City

Singapore 098008

Ticket prices : Adult $28 , Child $22 (Free admission for children below two years old), Family bundle S$48 for 1 Adult and 1 Child (Playtime of 2 hrs will apply on weekends, Public holiday and school holidays)

Yes, most parents will be taken aback by the fees charged to the adults. I guess they are also expecting tourists (being located in Sentosa) hence the fees charged for an adult. I guess there should have another pricing category where adults accompany children are at a discounted price to make it more affordable for families in Singapore to enjoy this new-age, digital playground.

And with Kidzania expected to be launched in April (just heard word that it will open on 12 Apr), my word of advice is to pay a visit when you are visiting Sentosa any time soon and when you need a shelter from the hot weather after a day out at Sentosa before the crowd descends.

Thanks to the good folks at MOSH!, we are pleased to be giving away two set of family package (2A & 2C) worth SGD 100 each set.

Giveaway of a family package of 4 tickets : Disney on Ice presents Magical Ice Festival 2016

After the long year end Christmas and new year break, the kids returned to school but there is Kidsfest in Jan/Feb to look forward to. Then there is the Lunar Chinese new year break and before long the first school holiday beckons and what is even better than the school holiday ……. Disney on Ice,   which is a common fixture during the March school holidays as far as I can recall! This year’s installment will be the 3rd time we are watching as a family. Some old pictures to reminisce our magical nights in March for the past years….

This was taken in pre show in 2013 when C was just over 2 years of age and probably her first picture as a princess! IMG_1969

Then in 2014, we had to bring the baby along all dressed as Mickey and the princess at 3 years old.

IMG_9039IMG_9000

I cant recalled why we missed last year’s show but probably there wasn’t a show last year. But it is definitely returning with a bang by bringing the cast of Frozen and featuring Let it Go! And a little treat for J for completing Term 1 of primary 1…ok its just an excuse but since we do not have any holiday plans, I guess this is the next best event to look forward to.

Truth to be told, their mummy is a mega big Disney fan and with this year’s installment featuring Elsa and Anna, I am not prepared to “Let it Go”. Whether is it the kids accompanying me to watch or the other way around, this is a family event I do not want to miss. Sorry daddy, you have to join in for this year as we will be going as a complete family of 6 including the baby (baby enters for free if below 2 years old and do not occupy a seat).

Besides, the ever so popular Frozen cast, kids will be entertained to Sebastian and Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel and her charming Flynn from Tangled and Belle and Beast from Beauty and the Beast. It will be a mix of old favourites and the magical, freezing, cant-let-it-go-as-yet Frozen!
Of course not forgetting, the favourite of them all, Mickey and his friends !

Giveaway & Review – Math-a-Morphosis , board games are the way forward! (Part 3 of 3)

In my household, I have never owned a tablet or Ipad of any generations as I believe if I don’t have the gadgets,  my kids will have no access to it. The main driving force behind my thinking is due to poor eyesight and vision due to continued usage etc.  I am fully aware there are information abound on the Internet if used properly .  The information from the internet can do the kids a whole world of good, which is the greatest debate on the use of technology for the young and the preschoolers. I do not have an answer but in my household, I had subscribed to no ipad or tablets since the day J was born until the absolute need arises. So my kids are most happy when relatives visit as most will come with tablets or Ipad , they are one of the most technology deprived kids in Singapore.

As the family grew and kids needing attention, there is a occasional need to let my smartphone babysit the the younger crying wailing kids. Nevertheless, it was for very small snippets of time and I can’t be too rigid for my own good sanity dealing with 4 kids under 7. For example when small J whine and cry, I  will use my phone to take a video of him and let him watch his own crying on the phone. He would immediately stop his crying and watch his own videos repeatedly. That is my best “hack” for small J. It has worked in most occasions especially outside!

So what does my kids do during spare time? I am not so fixative about watching TV though as the screen is bigger and I myself grew up watching……loads of it in fact and it did not affect my grades. I suppose the attraction of the tablets vs the TV is different and the  level of damage to the vision as well. I have used DVD like Leapfrog, I can read  to “babysit” the kids at times.

Of coz there are the toys, but they can get bored of it easily, so the best way is to keep in storage some and resurface them after a while and they will treat it with new interest!

And my absolute favourite …..board games! However for board games, it works for older kids say 4 year old and above to be able to understand the concept of the board games etc. There was a time that J was so into snake and ladders that he will invite everyone in the household to play with him including his sister who don’t really understand the concept but play along.

And over the holiday, J discover the whole new world of Monopoly as there was a set of kids Monopoly in the kids room at the hotel that we were staying over the year end break. He was very very happy to stay in the hotel room to play Monopoly. Thank god J only discover this on the last night of our stay….if not i am sure he will just stay in and not leave the hotel room. And after the trip,  I took our my decade old Monopoly set from storage and he was overjoyed!

I always knew J loved board games just that I didn’t have the time to sit and play with him. The only disadvantage of board games , most cannot be played singly!. You also need some one else to play with unlike the smartphone, tablets etc. But the disadvantage can turn into an advantage which open a whole side of being sociable, and not afraid of losing etc.

And when learning Mathematics can be part of a board game…that is a total jackpot to a parent like me and its not at all boring ..to some Mathematics can be boring because there ain’t much imagination or colour or fanciful words….so playing with Mathematical concepts…how fun can it be? I would not be going through all 26 variation of games but some of the more interesting ones for my kids.

Geometry set

The sets are targeted mainly for kids ages 6 to 10 years old but how my 5 and 3 years old uses the materials in it, it is just pure magic! These two sets are locally produced by the publisher Add-venture Learning who also publishes the magazines, +venture in Maths and Inspire. You can read my reviews of the magazines in my previous posts.

Math-a-Morphosis Geometry Set

IMG_0167

This set come with 4 different coloured sets of tangrams, 1 shape dice, 1 number dice, 1 fraction dice ,4 counters , 3 sets of cards game , 1 set of big tangram cards, 1 board game and 1 set of double sided jigsaw puzzles.

IMG_0161

This table list the no of variation of games and the play. This Geometry set has a total of 10 games of differing levels and play mode -individual  or group. For each game, the table will show the topics covered and the skills acquired. In each of the games set, it is divided into card games and board games.

Geometry – Card Games

I have tried several games with the kids, mainly with J of course as the games are all pitched for his age group. The first 3 games names memory, 2 Plus 1 and 3 Plus 1 (varying difficulty). These 3 games are suitable for ages even from my 2.5 year old. There are many ways to play it..ie competitive mode, or just simply play it singly just like what my 2.5 year old and my 5 year old did. There are also the more challenging 7 piece tangram formations which my 7 year old can complete easily. Even though there are some simpler 7 -piece formation one which my 5 year old can to do as well.

Seen here is my 2.5 year old unassisted trying to do the tangram card games from the simpler sets and my 5 year old attempting the 7 piece formation.

Board games

My 5 year and 7 year old loved the slide and splash board game. It used the 7 piece tangram set. The rule is to use the snake and ladder concept which most kids will be familiar with and the first person who complete their selected tangram picture will be the winner. Now he has abandoned the basic snake and ladder board game for this “improved” and more challenging “snake and ladder” game.

12647236_10153573153699143_7742811723642494028_n

slide and splash

The tac-toe board games is double sided with 2 mode of play- fraction or tangram. After fixing up the 9-piece jigsaw, it will reveal 9 different shapes. The concept of play is just like how we play tic-tac-toe, ie winner is the first to form a straight line. For the fraction-tac-toe, it uses a number dice to determine whether a player completes the selected shape or complete half of the shape depending whether it is odd or even number.  For the tangram-tac-toe, it uses the shape dice to determine which share the player get  to pick first and complete using their own tangram pieces.

tangram-tac-toe

I must admit this is the more favoured set of the 2 game sets as it has 4 coloured tangram pieces  set (colour and tangible appeals to younger kids) and concepts which my younger kids understand ie shape.  However for J he is indifferent has he loved different games in both set.

Math-a-Morphosis Numbers Set

IMG_0159

This set consist of 1 10-sided direc, 2 6-sided number dice, 2 sets of Number Friends cards (0-20), 2o hexagon counters and 2 sets of number plates (0-9) and 10 operations plate (6 ‘+/-‘ and 4 ‘x/÷’), 2 board games and 3 number hunt game sets.

IMG_0156

This set has a total of 16 variaion of games divided into card and board games of varying level , play mode. The list also outlines with topics and skills corresponding to each game.

Numbers – card games

Number memory game are suitable even for younger kids. It is a fairly simple concept of covering the 10 pairs of cards from 0 to 9 and the person who has the identified the most identical pairs win. To make it a bit more difficult , remove the “0” pair , and instead of matching similar numbers, matching by number bond of 10 ….9&1, 8&2 etc. For older kids, you can even use 2 sets of of 1-20 number cards and create memory cards game for multiplication and division too!

Fun with Numbers is a set of 24  puzzles involving whole numbers and 4 operations. Using the number plates provided, J is able to try different permutations to find the correct combination. Some of the puzzles are more difficult than the other. Just work through the different puzzles with your child and this make addition and subtraction less of a chore and fun!

(p/s not to worry there is a guidance booklet with suggested answer if the parents themselves have difficulty)

Numbers – board games

One of J’s favourite is the number hunt game. There are 3 variations to this board game consisting Number hunt I, number hunt II and fraction hunt. The difference between Number hunt I and II is one uses addition and subtraction while the later used four operations. For now, the fraction hunt will be too difficult for J as he is not expose to fraction yet. He was happily “hunting” for the correct number sets on a Friday night which is designated as PLAY night!

3-Out is a visual and strategic thinking game whereby the player loses if 3 hexagon counters are in the same line.

12670407_10153573422659143_5809543891554731047_n

3-Out

Math chess is a mini board game for pupils to practise forming maths sentences using 4 operations. This game can be played individually. For primary 1, you may begin with addition and subtraction plates first before venturing into all 4 operations.

12647253_10153573422654143_2421513441064924425_n

maths chess

My favourite childhood board game was Mastermind. Much to my delight when I saw a similar concept game appearing in this Numbers set. It is called the secret code. Instead of using coloured pegs, it uses numbers! Yellow hexagon counters represent the number is not in the correct position while the red hexagon counters represent the correct number and position.

Secret Code

Secret Code

There are still many unexplored games in both sets and varying level of difficulties. So these 2 sets will be still of use when J goes to upper primary to introduce him new concepts through play. I guess the main problem for parents is finding time to “play” with the kids. Of course if you have 2 primary school going kids, there maybe less of an issue as they are play most of the board games together. The older kid can even teach the younger kids new concept like how J teaches C to play the number bond memory game. For the other games, it will be for me to play with J mostly for now. In the constant call for more face time and less screen time, this may be the way forward and board games to me are a better investment that toys! Board games can be heirloom too….like my decade- old monopoly and scrabble sets!

These game sets are priced as a bundle of 2 sets at SGD 70. Individually they are priced at SGD 40 a set. You can order through using this form.

Finally, the giveaway as promised, it will be the exact same 2 sets of Math-a-Morphosis game sets of Numbers and Geometry(worth SGD70) featured in this review for 1 very lucky reader (which includes free delivery to your home) for hours of mathematics fun and family bonding.
