The Ant and The Grasshopper – ITheatre’s first production to kickstart 2017 (giveaway)

I must say kids living in Singapore are one of the luckiest lot, there are so much to see, do and watch throughout the year. Kidsfest 2017 starts in January, and in February,  I Theatre will kickstart their 2017’s lineup with the perennial favourite, a very famous Aesop fable, The Ant and The Grasshopper.

One of the first shows that my kids or at least the older kids caught with ITheatre was The Ant and The Grasshopper back in 2014 when C was just turned 3 and watching one of her first live theatre shows. I was worried about her level of understanding or if she will be distracted, but my fears were unfounded. She was mesmerised by the puppets and the songs even though she may not fully understand the moral behind the story which is the essence of any Aesop fable.

img_8438

I Theatre always have a meet and greet after the show with the cast , it is great compilation of the shows we have watched throughout the years

So when I saw the 2017’s ITheatre lineup featuring this show, I have already ticked this on my t0-watch-list more for the benefit of the my younger kids (who didn’t get to watch it in 2014)  as a fun and musical introduction to Aesop fables.

aag017-landscape-10x15

Once there lived an Ant – a hard-working and ever-busy Ant who never seemed to have time for play or relaxation. And then there was Grasshopper, with time on his hands and nothing much to do all day.

And visiting from time to time, there is Caterpillar!

Somehow they were friends. All day long Ant would work hard, without stop or rest, collecting grains of wheat and storing them carefully in her larder.

And Grasshopper would laugh, and say. ‘Why do you work so hard, dear Ant? Come, and rest awhile, listen to my song. Summer is here; the days are long and bright. Why waste the sunshine in labour and toil?’

Whilst Caterpillar calmly carried on, doing what caterpillars do best…

But Summer does not last long – and soon Winter and the frozen cold will come…

What will happen to Grasshopper then?

What exactly will Ant do?

And where will Caterpillar go?

These are the stills from the 2014 productions , after watching the show you will feel like its the summertime in the garden! Watch it and you will know what I mean!

Smart Mathematicians – maths magazine for primary school (giveaway)

From the publishers of the ever popular Young Scientists magazine (read my previous review here), come the latest magazine targeting at mathematics concepts, Smart Mathematicians. The magazine was launched early this year and similar to the Young Scientists magazine it is divided into lower primary and upper primary version. This is the only comic based mathematics magazine that complies to Singapore MOE syllabus in Singapore.

15094239_10154350816129143_714250132405862789_n

I will share some sample pages of the magazines. I am sure all kids will take a liking into the colourful pages and simple script of the comic and yet it will deliver some mathematics concepts at the same time. Even C is able to read this as the scripts uses simple English, and yet beneath the story, some mathematical concepts are introduced in a subtle way.

Especially for the school holidays, when making J do mathematics workbook seems to make me  look like a tiger mum, I am sure he will see this as just fun reading not knowing that he will probably be learning some of the  new maths concepts in primary 2.

15203303_10154350780324143_7076852535282062916_n

What I like about this is the introduction of mathematics concept through stories and comics. Some concept like division and fraction may look alien and uninteresting if merely taught by mathematics symbols and numbers, but once the concept is weaved into a comic, the understanding becomes easier to relate and understood. It helps that the pages are so full of colours , make it more attractive to read also unlike their primary school textbooks.

15085546_10154350780834143_5401747255600152415_n

Besides the comics, in the middle of the magazines are pages of worksheets for primary 1 ,2 and 3. For J, he does the primary 1 worksheets to revise and strengthen his understanding and the primary 2 to see how much he knows. He may not know all of it but it was a good try. However, primary 3 is beyond him, so we will leave it for later.

15400360_10154393068549143_8727807332940860127_n

There are even pages for Olympiad Maths standard  for kids who wants to be challenged further.

Gakken New Blocks and Gakken Go-Go Series work book (giveaway)

You may find the Gakken Go-Go series familiar when you are browsing and stocking up books at Popular, but I am sure if you have not heard of the Gakken New Blocks.

And I am sure you didn’t know that they are from the same companies and its from Japan.

Gakken New Blocks

15181215_10154349984199143_7874240691458010295_n

Recently , I opened a new toy for baby C, a birthday gift which obviously I forgotten. It was those battery operated toys and baby C lost interest with it within 5 to 10 minutes. Many a times, I will end up with battery leakages on those battery operated toys which is one of my pet peeves. So I have stopped buying battery operated toys in a long long while. I preferred non battery operated toys and with no fix way of playing ie open-ended. Of course , the first type that came to mind are the Lego blocks. Recently, I got the kids Magnatiles and they spent endless hours building whatever they come to mind. So I am always looking out for such “toys” and when I came across the Gakken New Blocks , I knew it will be something that my kids will indulge for many hours and I wont be plagued by future problems like battery leakages.

The set that I gotten for the kids is the mixed sets meaning this set includes parts to create vehicles, dinosaurs, etc. Gakken New Blocks are comes in sets with specific themes like vehicle, tools, flower and even based on The Hungry Caterpillar. You can find the full series here

untitled

What I really like is that the blocks are soft and made using safe materials (no PVC or Phthalate plasticizer is used in a block )

Even if baby C is in his nasty mood, and threw the blocks to his older siblings, they would not get hurt by it. The size of the blocks are big enough for young children to play with it and big enough not to be “swallowed” by the baby. Yes, he is now in the phase of putting non-food items into his mouth too!

15085704_10154350801244143_4633764570591056023_n

The set comes with instruction booklets more for clueless and uncreative parents like me , who does not have an ounce of creativity but wish to impress the kids by my creations. But frankly as this is an open ended toy sets, it is best to let the child unleash their creativity and imagination and you will be amazed by their creativity.

15095083_10154349984954143_4026505267592988825_n

Even the lid of the set is designed to hold the pieces and the kids’ creation!

I initially thought that J, being 7 years old all would find the blocks big and kiddish, but he enjoyed building with them too. I guess there is no age limit to such blocks just like Lego I guess. This is probably one for few toys in my household that all my 4 kids (age ranging from 1 plus to 7 plus) can play together.

Gakken Go Go Series workbook

Besides the Gakken New Block, the company also produces a wonderful series of preschool activity books. The  Gakken Go Go series may not be as popular as the Kumon books (in my opinion) but after going through several of the Go Go workbook with small J, I dared say its actually more packed with activities for about the same price as Kumon books. Actually , the Gakken workbook has a big as a market share in Japan as Kumon books as I found out from the local distributor. I guess the biggest difference is that Gakken workbook are target at the preschooler aged 2 to 6 years old while Kumon goes way beyond preschool.

15078563_10154349981304143_8345335841201184158_n

Let me share some sample pages of the Go Go cutting and pasting book which involves cutting, pasting and folding.

15193681_10154350789854143_94844101570311275_n

so apt for the upcoming year end festivities

I knew that small J would totally love this particular book as he has finished practically all the Kumon series book for cutting/pasting.

The pictures below show the pages from the Intellectual Skills and Life Skills book. I would say that Gakken Go Go Series books are perfect for the 3 years olds who are learning how to read which is the stage where small J is right now. He absolutely loved all the activities in the workbooks and insisted on completing it every night.

Reading right with world first smart bookstand – BookBuddy

When I come across a kids related product that is made or conceptualised by a local Singaporean/ company, my radar goes up! Often enough , most kids related products are from the US or like the best wooden toys from Germany etc, seldom we do we see kids related local products which are made for us local and urban kids in mind. So when I saw BookBuddy, I knew I had to try it out in the name of supporting local products and of course most importantly to cultivate good reading habits!

Since young, I have tried to reduce screen time for my kids in the bid to delay myopia. As my older two kids are already starting reading on their own, many a times I cannot ensure that they are reading in conducive environments as I need to tend to my younger kids. They will normally grab a book and read just about any where in the house, on the sofa, on the floor etc. I can nag and nag as much as I want but I am unable to cultivate good reading habits and I hope to solve this with the BookBuddy.

14563299_10154243023584143_5425889014790701449_n-1

I was a bookworm when I was young and often I will lie on the bed to read with no proper lighting. To no one surprise, my myopia was as high as 600 plus (though it was corrected by the wonderful technology of LASIK in my adult years).

The 3 most important elements to proper reading and healthy eyesight are light, posture and time.

untitled

With BookBuddy, kids are reminded to maintain good posture, read in sufficient light and take sufficient breaks in between read to rest the eyes with the use of light sensors. These 3 very important aspects are often overlook which is also the cause of increase the myopia in kids in Singapore. With the BookBuddy, kids are reminded to maintain all the 3 elements by  the inbuild light sensors. Besides functioning as a book stand, the BookBuddy will act as my “nagging persona” especially when I am busy with my younger kids.

features2

There are 2 light sensors indicating when its too dark, too near or too long. For example, if the child is reading too near, one of the light sensor will beep to tell the child that they are reading too near and need to be readjusted.

The BookBuddy also offer 2 reading angles – 60 degree and 22 degree . The 60 degree is more for general reading while the 22 degree is more for referencing when doing school home work.

20161017_202034-2

It is also very lightweight and you can bring it along for outings or for travel. It is also very slim and fit easily in my kids’ ergo table’s pull out drawer so that it does not take up any space on the desk when it is not in used.

20161017_203808-2

It may a bit early to say whether the BookBuddy will be able to cultivate a lifelong habit of correct reading habits, but it better to start earlier than later.

Check out this video where books, papers and tablets of differing thickness and sizes fit well using the BookBuddy. Most importantly, parents please ensure the battery are charged fully to make full use of the light sensors.

3bbcolours-800x575

Powered by 2 AA batteries (which are provided with the set), BookBuddy comes in 3 colours,  Brainy Blue , Perky Pink and Groovy Green. Each set comes with a 1 year warranty.

The BookBuddy is priced at SGD 84.90. It may seems a tad pricey for a “reading aid” but there is really no price to pay to maintain good eyesight and keep myopia at bay and for kids which already have myopia to slow down the increase of myopia. And for now there is a 20% discount if you were to order online here

Disclosure: I received a Groovy Green BookBuddy for the purposes of my review. No monetary compensation was received. All opinions are my own.

The latest sun & swim care range for kids from Pout Care!

My kids have been exposed to swimming at an early age -3/4 years of age (nothing to do with the Schooling effect). Of all skills to be learnt, I am most particular about swimming as it is a survival skill and a very good form of exercise. Kids who are asthmatic are also encouraged to take up swimming lesson.  There are many reported cases of children drowning often due to lack of adult supervision. I am not saying that when kids know basic swimming skills adults can supervise less, but kids should know be afraid of the water and have some water confidence if faced with water hazards to reduce the chances of drowning.

However, that said swimming is the most “harsh” of sports. Not only does my kids get exposed to UV rays , they are also exposed to the chlorine in the pool. As my kids swim regularly, I am often on the lookout for good sun and swim care products formulated for kids specifically. There aren’t many in the market , and I am glad to have found it in Pout Care. Not only are they specifically designed for kids , the packaging comes in the prettiest labels , which kids wouldn’t want to use it. They are have matching stickers with bottle labels. Pout Care is made in Australia using  natural ingredients without any harmful sulphates and parabens to clean and hydrate. Pout Care also add a variety of organic plant and flower extracts, such as Alfafa, Sage and Rosemary, to help enrich and strengthen children’s hair.  Hence, their product is specifically formulate for children as they tend to have sensitive hair and skin.

Besides the ingredients used, Pout Care also has carefully designed the bottle packaging which are represented by the 7 different fairy tales characters. Each character represents a different products from their range. Each character are the one printed on the stickers as well which accompanying  every product purchased. Each character/product features a fun poem describing the adventures of the character associated with the product.  My kids were first attracted by the pretty packaging, then the wonderful smell when using the products! First time, my kids took notice of the products they are using (because no other children’s products is so pretty!)  I wouldn’t bear to discard the bottle once they finish using it! Once you have collected all 7 bottles, it can create a pretty carousel just like the picture below!

Not only they come with the prettiest labels, they smell really fruity and nice!

Orange Float Sun & Swim Protection

20160917_133052

This spray which represented by orange sea diver helps protect the hair from UV rays, chlorine and salt water. It creates a protective barrier to minimise the exposure when the kids going outdoor for sports especially water sports. The main ingredients in this bottle are calendula (which soothe sensitive scalps) , rosemary ( encourages healthy hair) and comfrey  (condition and nourishes the hair). All it takes is a free spritz on the hair and massage all over the hair before going for the outdoor activities or swim. So not only my kids are protected by sunscreen for the body, now I have an excellent product to protect the hair too from the harsh sun and water be it the sea or the swimming pool!

Grapefruit Island Swimmers’ Top to Toe

This product is represent by the pirate is a specially formulated for remove chlorine and salt water from hair and skin after swimming. It helps repair and protect hair and skin from chlorine and salt water damage. Its main ingredients are sage (encourages hair growth), comfrey (nourishes hair) and parsley (anti bacterial benefits) and contains Vitamin B5 to help regenerate hair and skin. Big J is always very indifferent about the shampoo that he uses as he is only one in the family who is less sensitive , so he can use any random shampoo (unlike the other 3 which has sensitive skins , all have their own shampoo). When he first used this, he actually commented that it smell very very nice! Besides smelling heavenly, I am glad that I am using this after their weekly swimming session to remove all the chlorine residue from the swim!

Huckleberry Sorbet Natural Hair Wax

Besides the new swim care range, I will also be reviewing the hair wax. I don’t think there is any other hair wax in the Singapore that is specifically formulated for kids as I have been looking for it myself for the longest time! I always have to “steal” the hair gel from my husband for big J! I don’t normally use hair wax for my kids, but  on special occasion such as dinners , photoshoots and their performance arts recitals, I will be “stealing” hair gel from my husband. Now, the boys will be sharing this tub of hair wax specially formulated for kids.14570280_10154220879884143_3594290819881700032_n-1

Mad scientist is the character for this hair wax. It is made from organic Bordoch root (decrease breakage), rosemary (encourages healthy hair) and yarrow (for treating dandruff, itchiness and scalp irritation).  The wax gives a medium to firm hold and a matte finish to the hair styles!

sporty hair do all thanks to the Huckleberry Sorbet Hair Wax from Pout Care

Green Apple Whoosh Hydrating Conditioner

I do not use hair conditioner for my girl’s long hair often. But I do tend to use it after a swim to manage the hair and give it a tangled free after shower. The green witch represent this product which contains organic alfafa (strengthen hair and scalp) calendula (soothe sensitive scalp) and elderflower (condition scalp). It smells so good that i use my own conditioner smells so good too! After hair wash, my girl’s hair stays tangled free!

The remaining 3 characters/products from Pout Care are the peaches and cream natural detangler (fairy) , strawberry magic natural shampoo(princess) and blueberry potion natural shampoo(knight).

Do check out Pout Care’s complete range of products here….they are so so pretty!

Do try them out especially they are offering at 15% discount for their new sun and swim care range!

All thanks to Baby Charleston Bondi 2.0 Stroller, I survived my HK trip with 4 kids aged 1 to 7 !

You may think that I am an expert in stroller given that I have 4 kids. Let me tell you the story of the strollers we had in our family.  I have lusted for many fancy strollers but my husband doesn’t believe in buying a stroller that cost 4 digit as cheaper strollers can do the job too.  My first ever stroller was a hand me down Graco stroller which came with a bassinet for newborn which serve me well for 2 kids. It was sturdy yet bulky though it has stand the test of time, used for more than 10 years!

Then came no 3 , I had another hand me down light weight Graco stroller and within a few weeks of his birth, we lost it! We lost it at a HDB car park as we forgot to unload it into our car. It was lost forever. Finally, we were forced to purchase a stroller after being parents for 4 years and for kid no 3. We brought a Capella stroller at Robinsons with minimal research (I was still harbouring hope for a fancy stroller, but hubby was wiser) which can be inverted as we thought it will be cool to face the crying baby as we never had that function in our previous hand me down . However after using it, the baby didn’t stop crying even though he is facing me. After the baby got bigger, we transited to lightweight umbrella stroller more for travelling purposes as the umbrella stroller collapses to take up a slimmer/ smaller part of the boot than the Capella.

As my family continues to grow, the boot space whenever we do our road trip is a hard squeeze. I remember we had to collapse of the one of the back row seats in our MPV just to squeeze in the long but thin umbrella stroller, else we would have to leave the stroller behind. And here is stroller no #5 and I am sure the last one of my household!

Unboxing it

The Bondi 2.0 comes in 5 unique colours – I chose turquoise as I feel it is more gender neutral. Every stroller purchase come with a cup holder, mosquito net. rain cover, cooling straw mat and a detachable front safety bar.

Storing it

IMG_1973

fit at the foot rest of my car

And let me tell you my greatest pet peeve. We owned an MPV by no choice due to the large family size This means that once we have reversed parked against a wall, we are unable to open the boot. So we have to come down remove the stroller, and then reverse all the way. The same goes for storing the stroller, drive out to open the boot unlike sedan, where we can open the boot without moving the car.

And when I saw  how compact the Baby Charleston’s Bondi 2.0 stroller when folded,  can actually placed it at the leg space at the baby seat (ie not the boot) I DO NOT EVER NEED TO OPEN THE CAR BOOT to store the stroller. How convenient. It is  SO COMPACT that the stroller can be carried to the cabin in the airplane as well. So we do not have to wait for the airport staff to retrieve it from the baggage storage –  picture and elaboration below.

And now whenever I go for road trip, the boot shall be solely for the luggage. I do not ever need to consider some space to put the stroller.  My only regret why didn’t I discover such a stroller before.  My husband who asked  me why do we need another stroller when I first got it is also a convert today because it is not just another stroller, it makes our lives so much easier and convenient minus the bulk and storage.

Picture speaks a thousand words, see how come the Bondi 2.0 vs my Capella or my umbrella stroller.

Using it

14202550_10154107520149143_4300450471039637178_n

As it is light weight and narrow, it is really a breeze strolling around the town, on pavements, we can push through tight spaces and gantries (at the immigration) which is unthinkable for my older strollers.

For the first time in my 7 years of parenting and 7 years of travelling with kids /babies in tow, I carried a stroller on board the plane! Typically, we will have the stroller all the way until the gate where it will picked up to be stored in the airplane’s baggage area. When we disembarked, some airports will have it ready at the door of the airplane itself or at times, at the baggage collection. It is not a long wait but when you have many kids and a sleeping toddler, the short wait can feel like its forever. With the stroller up in the cabin, this means I have instant access upon disembarkation which was a god send. We came back into Singapore at 1am and my 3 year old no matter want just couldn’t wake up, so we had the stroller opened at the door of the plane. So we had to carry him a short distance from the seats to the door of the plane and we can proceed ahead to the immigration and baggage collection.

The basket at the bottom is quite roomy too. Here is after my Lillebaby carrier (folder) and a Jujube fuel cell for baby milk etc.

Sometimes i prefer to hang it all up , the Jujube fuel cell and Super be diaper bag.

Loving it

I have been using it for more than 2 months now on weekend outings and a staycation and a vacation.

For my staycation,  it was 2 adults vs 4 kids and at one point my eldest was pushing the stroller while my no 3 was napping inside. It is very easy to maneuver. Despite it being light weight, it does feel stable and not going to topple easily especially if its a 15kg plus toddler.

However, do be careful as some of us parents have a habit of hanging lots of bags /barang on the stroller’s bar and when the “light -weight ” baby (like my #4 who is barely 10kg) is asleep , the centre of gravity will shift backwards and hence the overall weight will not be balanced with all the bags hang at the back of the stroller, and risk of toppling is exist.

If the baby is sitted up right, it is more balanced with the bags/barang at the back of the stroller, hence it is very stable despite the weight at the back of the stroller.

For my vacation, I travelled with all 4 kids without husband but with my parents.  I needed to travel light with as minimal luggage and a light weight stroller. I do not need to consider very much which stroller would follow us on the trip –  the one that is easiest to maneuver, lightest to carry and take the least amount of space when folded.

all thanks to the stroller I survived HK Disneyland with 4 kids!

all thanks to the stroller I survived HK Disneyland with 4 kids!

On our way back to HK airport, as we were near the Airport bus terminal ( I didn’t want to fuss looking for a taxi as we were just 15 min away from the airport), we took the Airport bus with 2 luggage bags , 4 kids and a stroller. As the stroller comes with a shoulder strap and I was carrying my baby using my Lillebaby , I am totally hands-free to even help my parents with one of the luggages to board the bus.

Though mine is a sponsored set, but when my husband was told the price of the stroller at the baby fair, he went “I told you, you don’t have to get a 4 digit price stroller to do the job and more!”

All my other strollers have been kept in storage as they do not serve my current lifestyle any more.

Now in conjunction with the up and coming baby fair, there is a pre-order promotion

Giveaway : Sudio Sweden’s VASA BLÅ Wireless – Freedom, Functionable, Fashionable!

So far my review has been 99.99% kids related products. I must disclaim and admit I am not a techie person and not updated with the least tech gadgets. Hence, I have not review a tech product before as it is not my forte. I shall be honest what caught my attention of this product was not its technical capability but two things – the wireless freedom and the colour PINK! In my free time online, it is always about me sussing out things for  my kids ; lesson, products, toys classes, clothings etc. Finally,  something for myself and I may turned into a cool and hip mummy!

In the past, I had never use earphones as I do not listen to music or during my train rides etc. All the earphones that came with every new handphone set that I have gotten is as new as when I got the phone.  But ever since the explosion of the Korean drama serial Descendants of the Sun, I had renewed interest in watching Korean drama after a hiatus of more than 5 years (no thanks to apps like VIU which makes catching Korean drama serial so easy and effortless)  , I had absolute reliance on earphones for my viewing pleasure. I started digging out the many “new” earphones can came free with the handphone set. Especially when I watch my drama at night or on my train ride, suddenly a pair of  earphones become an indispensable item just like my handphone.

However, conventional earphones come with long wires which often get tangled up much to my displeasure. Well, there are things are cord organisers etc but I really do not like having to wind the cord after every use etc. My earphones cords often get into a tangle mess which was my greatest pet peeves. Thanks to social media, I came across a beautiful pair of earphones in PINK! Not only it is pretty in PINK it is wireless ! As I am not a techy person I do not normally look at new products in the market but the Sudio’s VASA BLÅ caught my eyes and it was love at first sight. Two PINK earpieces connected by a short cord (in PINK) and that’s it. No more tangle mess ever!

I will share with you the technical aspects as best as a layman or a mummy can do. Besides PINK, it comes in 3 other different colours Blue, Rose gold black and Rose gold white.

Unboxing it

I wanted to write about the beauty but I guess for now I let the photos do the talking…and it comes with a matching leather pouch! In the box, the earphones also comes with 4 pair additional silicone earbuds of varying sizes,  a metal clip, charging cable, owner’s manual and quality assurance card.

Pairing it

It’s a no brainer. Just switch on the bluetooth on your handphone. There are only 3 buttons on the VASA, 2 volume control button and 1 main middle button. To turn on, press on the middle button till there is blue blinking lights. To pair, press the same button again and once it is connected you can hear it and it is indicated as “connected” on the handphone as well. To switch it off, press the same middle button and you will see red blinking lights.

Using it

On a single charge, the pink beauty can last as long as 6 to 8 hours  of usage. The sound quality is crisp and clear. It more than enough for my daily usage. So I do charge it at night every other day. For a quick charge, it is a fast at 10 minute but for a full charge, you need to charge it for 2 hours.

For Iphone user, the battery life can be seen next to the bluetooth symbol on your phone. However for Android users, you need to install a third party app in order to see the battery life. I have used both types of phones to pair with my pink beauty but I don’t really need to see the battery life on my Android devices as I charge it every other day based on my daily usage.

Loving it

I have been using it for more than 1 month now, mainly for my Korean drama viewing pleasure and listening to the Korean drama OST. I am glad that I have this wireless pink beauty with me now as I am going to start a fitness regime and some jogging/running. It will be so much easier to jog/run without a long cord attached to my phone!

Mummies may ask me for the price tag, it seems a bit steep when the “free” earphones can do the same job but to me , it is a small price to pair for 3 Fs – Freedom, functionality and fashionable!

14212183_10154104806019143_156732328802456829_n (1)

It is great as gift to husbands as well. My hubby uses earphones a lot at night to listen to music. I know he will totally love the Rose Gold Black Wireless Vasa. All purchase of earphones comes with a beautiful gift box and tag. For his next birthday, I do not need to crack my brains anymore and we can have matchy earphones!

Giveaway & Review: Little Passports Early Explorers and World Edition , the making of young global travellers!

IMG_2651

Little Passports

There is something magical about receiving mails and packages. In the day and age when emails overtake postal letters, it is often nice to open the letter box to find big parcel awaiting to be opened. My kids too love receiving letters and packages in their name. Well, it was the first time they receive such a huge package for them respectively all the way from the States.  The first ever package from Little Passports is  come in form of a  little suitcase to keep all the monthly materials going forward. C had the orange suitcase which is the Early Explorers series which is suitable for ages 3 to 5 while J had the blue suitcase which is the World Edition series which is suitable for ages 6 to 10. There are many subscription boxes in the market currently. Those locally produced in Singapore are mainly targeted at art and craft especially for time-strapped parents who want to do art and craft but do not have the time, idea and creative to execute them. I have always been looking out for more knowledge-based subscription boxes (quite lacking in the local scene). I came across Little Passports from the US which is all about the world and different places – elementary geography I would say!

Little Passports is developed by 2 US mummies  to expose the children to the world at the comfort of home. Many kids may not have the luxury of travelling far and hence, this subscription will introduce the kids to the world literally without having to book a flight ticket.

Little Passports – Early Explorers (3 to 5 years old)

The first package comes also with a wall size map with content suitable for this age group.Nothing too complicated, introducing the continents and oceans. This package even had plenty of stickers to decorate the suitcase, much to the delight of C! For the first package , C is introduced to the different continents in the world. This package also come with a 20 page activity booklet to reinforce the subject matter of the month.

The second package that come a month later was in a padded envelope containing the subject for the month. For the Early Explorers, they will get to learn about the famous landmarks in the world. It came with the cutest miniatures of some of the famous landmark in the world like Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Great Wall of China. With the help of the world map in the first package, C is able to identify the location of each of the landmarks. All subsequent packages come with 20-page activity booklet, fun souvenirs, Flashlight adventure, trading cards , letters, photos, stickers and luggage tags.

Little Passports – World Edition (6 to 10 years old)

One of the biggest differences even at its first package is the world map. Compared this to the one from the Early Explorers package, this map is more complex and has the name of the countries as well.

Similarly, it comes with an introduction letter, coloured worksheets and even a postcard.

In the same package, they also had a word puzzle whereby they are to identify the next destination which is the next package!

For the World Edition, the child can also login using a secret code to discover more fun and games online

There are many different plans for subscription. These are the prices for World Edition subscription.

world explorer package

After every package has arrived, Little Passports will also emailed additional materials to be printed out for those who are keen to do more than what has been sent over for both editions!

Check out the introduction video to Little Passports!

What I really like about subscription boxes are the idea of having a theme/topic for the month. There is no obligation to finish it in 1 sitting as it is done in the comfort of the home unlike having to attend a class.

As parents, we can also supplement the topic of the month by visiting the library and borrowing books of the same theme. For example, if the topic is on Brazil, I could borrow some books about Brazil or South America and impart more knowledge. With the subscription boxes, I have more structure in my home learning and ready materials to introduce a new country/ place/location to my kids! And this subscription also makes a excellent birthday gift from the usual toys and books for kids!

Thanks to the folks at Little Passports, they will be giving a free 3 month subscription to 1 lucky reader. The winner can choose any edition suitable for his/her child.

Please follow the steps below to be in the draw.

Giveaway & Review – Math-a-Morphosis , board games are the way forward! (Part 3 of 3)

In my household, I have never owned a tablet or Ipad of any generations as I believe if I don’t have the gadgets,  my kids will have no access to it. The main driving force behind my thinking is due to poor eyesight and vision due to continued usage etc.  I am fully aware there are information abound on the Internet if used properly .  The information from the internet can do the kids a whole world of good, which is the greatest debate on the use of technology for the young and the preschoolers. I do not have an answer but in my household, I had subscribed to no ipad or tablets since the day J was born until the absolute need arises. So my kids are most happy when relatives visit as most will come with tablets or Ipad , they are one of the most technology deprived kids in Singapore.

As the family grew and kids needing attention, there is a occasional need to let my smartphone babysit the the younger crying wailing kids. Nevertheless, it was for very small snippets of time and I can’t be too rigid for my own good sanity dealing with 4 kids under 7. For example when small J whine and cry, I  will use my phone to take a video of him and let him watch his own crying on the phone. He would immediately stop his crying and watch his own videos repeatedly. That is my best “hack” for small J. It has worked in most occasions especially outside!

So what does my kids do during spare time? I am not so fixative about watching TV though as the screen is bigger and I myself grew up watching……loads of it in fact and it did not affect my grades. I suppose the attraction of the tablets vs the TV is different and the  level of damage to the vision as well. I have used DVD like Leapfrog, I can read  to “babysit” the kids at times.

Of coz there are the toys, but they can get bored of it easily, so the best way is to keep in storage some and resurface them after a while and they will treat it with new interest!

And my absolute favourite …..board games! However for board games, it works for older kids say 4 year old and above to be able to understand the concept of the board games etc. There was a time that J was so into snake and ladders that he will invite everyone in the household to play with him including his sister who don’t really understand the concept but play along.

And over the holiday, J discover the whole new world of Monopoly as there was a set of kids Monopoly in the kids room at the hotel that we were staying over the year end break. He was very very happy to stay in the hotel room to play Monopoly. Thank god J only discover this on the last night of our stay….if not i am sure he will just stay in and not leave the hotel room. And after the trip,  I took our my decade old Monopoly set from storage and he was overjoyed!

I always knew J loved board games just that I didn’t have the time to sit and play with him. The only disadvantage of board games , most cannot be played singly!. You also need some one else to play with unlike the smartphone, tablets etc. But the disadvantage can turn into an advantage which open a whole side of being sociable, and not afraid of losing etc.

And when learning Mathematics can be part of a board game…that is a total jackpot to a parent like me and its not at all boring ..to some Mathematics can be boring because there ain’t much imagination or colour or fanciful words….so playing with Mathematical concepts…how fun can it be? I would not be going through all 26 variation of games but some of the more interesting ones for my kids.

Geometry set

The sets are targeted mainly for kids ages 6 to 10 years old but how my 5 and 3 years old uses the materials in it, it is just pure magic! These two sets are locally produced by the publisher Add-venture Learning who also publishes the magazines, +venture in Maths and Inspire. You can read my reviews of the magazines in my previous posts.

Math-a-Morphosis Geometry Set

IMG_0167

This set come with 4 different coloured sets of tangrams, 1 shape dice, 1 number dice, 1 fraction dice ,4 counters , 3 sets of cards game , 1 set of big tangram cards, 1 board game and 1 set of double sided jigsaw puzzles.

IMG_0161

This table list the no of variation of games and the play. This Geometry set has a total of 10 games of differing levels and play mode -individual  or group. For each game, the table will show the topics covered and the skills acquired. In each of the games set, it is divided into card games and board games.

Geometry – Card Games

I have tried several games with the kids, mainly with J of course as the games are all pitched for his age group. The first 3 games names memory, 2 Plus 1 and 3 Plus 1 (varying difficulty). These 3 games are suitable for ages even from my 2.5 year old. There are many ways to play it..ie competitive mode, or just simply play it singly just like what my 2.5 year old and my 5 year old did. There are also the more challenging 7 piece tangram formations which my 7 year old can complete easily. Even though there are some simpler 7 -piece formation one which my 5 year old can to do as well.

Seen here is my 2.5 year old unassisted trying to do the tangram card games from the simpler sets and my 5 year old attempting the 7 piece formation.

Board games

My 5 year and 7 year old loved the slide and splash board game. It used the 7 piece tangram set. The rule is to use the snake and ladder concept which most kids will be familiar with and the first person who complete their selected tangram picture will be the winner. Now he has abandoned the basic snake and ladder board game for this “improved” and more challenging “snake and ladder” game.

12647236_10153573153699143_7742811723642494028_n

slide and splash

The tac-toe board games is double sided with 2 mode of play- fraction or tangram. After fixing up the 9-piece jigsaw, it will reveal 9 different shapes. The concept of play is just like how we play tic-tac-toe, ie winner is the first to form a straight line. For the fraction-tac-toe, it uses a number dice to determine whether a player completes the selected shape or complete half of the shape depending whether it is odd or even number.  For the tangram-tac-toe, it uses the shape dice to determine which share the player get  to pick first and complete using their own tangram pieces.

tangram-tac-toe

I must admit this is the more favoured set of the 2 game sets as it has 4 coloured tangram pieces  set (colour and tangible appeals to younger kids) and concepts which my younger kids understand ie shape.  However for J he is indifferent has he loved different games in both set.

Math-a-Morphosis Numbers Set

IMG_0159

This set consist of 1 10-sided direc, 2 6-sided number dice, 2 sets of Number Friends cards (0-20), 2o hexagon counters and 2 sets of number plates (0-9) and 10 operations plate (6 ‘+/-‘ and 4 ‘x/÷’), 2 board games and 3 number hunt game sets.

IMG_0156

This set has a total of 16 variaion of games divided into card and board games of varying level , play mode. The list also outlines with topics and skills corresponding to each game.

Numbers – card games

Number memory game are suitable even for younger kids. It is a fairly simple concept of covering the 10 pairs of cards from 0 to 9 and the person who has the identified the most identical pairs win. To make it a bit more difficult , remove the “0” pair , and instead of matching similar numbers, matching by number bond of 10 ….9&1, 8&2 etc. For older kids, you can even use 2 sets of of 1-20 number cards and create memory cards game for multiplication and division too!

Fun with Numbers is a set of 24  puzzles involving whole numbers and 4 operations. Using the number plates provided, J is able to try different permutations to find the correct combination. Some of the puzzles are more difficult than the other. Just work through the different puzzles with your child and this make addition and subtraction less of a chore and fun!

(p/s not to worry there is a guidance booklet with suggested answer if the parents themselves have difficulty)

Numbers – board games

One of J’s favourite is the number hunt game. There are 3 variations to this board game consisting Number hunt I, number hunt II and fraction hunt. The difference between Number hunt I and II is one uses addition and subtraction while the later used four operations. For now, the fraction hunt will be too difficult for J as he is not expose to fraction yet. He was happily “hunting” for the correct number sets on a Friday night which is designated as PLAY night!

3-Out is a visual and strategic thinking game whereby the player loses if 3 hexagon counters are in the same line.

12670407_10153573422659143_5809543891554731047_n

3-Out

Math chess is a mini board game for pupils to practise forming maths sentences using 4 operations. This game can be played individually. For primary 1, you may begin with addition and subtraction plates first before venturing into all 4 operations.

My favourite childhood board game was Mastermind. Much to my delight when I saw a similar concept game appearing in this Numbers set. It is called the secret code. Instead of using coloured pegs, it uses numbers! Yellow hexagon counters represent the number is not in the correct position while the red hexagon counters represent the correct number and position.

There are still many unexplored games in both sets and varying level of difficulties. So these 2 sets will be still of use when J goes to upper primary to introduce him new concepts through play. I guess the main problem for parents is finding time to “play” with the kids. Of course if you have 2 primary school going kids, there maybe less of an issue as they are play most of the board games together. The older kid can even teach the younger kids new concept like how J teaches C to play the number bond memory game. For the other games, it will be for me to play with J mostly for now. In the constant call for more face time and less screen time, this may be the way forward and board games to me are a better investment that toys! Board games can be heirloom too….like my decade- old monopoly and scrabble sets!

These game sets are priced as a bundle of 2 sets at SGD 70. Individually they are priced at SGD 40 a set. You can order through using this form.

Finally, the giveaway as promised, it will be the exact same 2 sets of Math-a-Morphosis game sets of Numbers and Geometry(worth SGD70) featured in this review for 1 very lucky reader (which includes free delivery to your home) for hours of mathematics fun and family bonding.

This is the second of a 3 part series blog review for the wonderful publications and products by Add-venture Learning. It is not just 1 magazine but 2 magazines in 1 issue. Hence each issue has 2 covers, The Wonderful World of Words (WOW) and Exploring Our World.

The Wonderful World of Words (WOW)

This magazine follows the adventure of the Royal family of WOW and learning grammar in the fun way. The first issue introduces King Norman Nautilus Noun. No prizes for guessing what the King will be teaches the readers….NOUNS! There are colourful pictures to introduce what are nouns and even a picture puzzle to find nouns in the picture. In the second issue, Queen Verb is being introduced to the readers and there was a fun exchanges between the King and Queen whether Noun or Verb is more important.

Exploring Our World

This magazine introduces social issues and values through the use of stories, poems and lots of hands-on activities which follows the adventures of Kit and his friends, Mitra and Hairy. They will be exploring the world around them and introduce values such as positive self-esteem, how everyone is special and many more through the 8 issues.

What accompany this magazine are many fun hands-on activities. Some of the examples are shown in the pictures below:

There is a poetry corner to introduce the values taught in each issue.

Finally like in the +venture in Maths magazine, there is a half a page of Parent’s page to outline how parents can further encourage the child using  the values outline in each issue and on how to use the Hands-on activities with the child.

There is also a section called “Dear Kit” where the child can send short notes to the publisher and they will be rewarded with little gifts.

Both magazines are written by local English educators and are in line with MOE syllable.

With all schools on STELLAR programme for English language, there is no longer a textbook or a workbook for English. Some parents like myself may be a bit lost when we don’t see thick textbook to accompany the child’s learning. With the Inspire magazines, the parents are guided as to what the expectations are for primary 1 English syllable.

The colourful and short comic strips on both magazines are also very engaging not just for my p1 boy but also for my younger kids aged 3 and 5. They are able to appreciate the stories and also engage in the hands on activities such as finger printing whereby the kids are introduced the concept that finger prints are unique.

I am also thinking of using this magazine to slowly introduce English in a more systematic manner to my 5 year old girl instead of throwing her with English worksheets and workbook randomly (that was what I did for J).

The magazine can be subscribed via school or home at a price of SGD 37   for 8 issues per academic year (additional top up of SGD 10 for home delivery). As this magazine is newly launched in 2015, , currently they only have it for primary 1 and are currently working on issues for the primary 2 onward. For more details, do check out their website.

You can view my earlier post in on +venture in Maths here.

Next up, will be my review of the many many games that you can play with your kids using the Numbers and Geomety Math-A-Morphosis game sets. As there is continued emphasis for less screen time and more face time, board games are the way forward and I can tell you my kids are begging for me to play with them every night ever since they spotted these two sets at home!
